I was just wondering how closely most people track the size of their hoard. Since I am a hand sorter and don't have a counter I have to just approximate. I usually store my copper in empty Brinks boxes. I probably fit between 20 and 23 dollars per box. That leaves a pretty big range.
Do people that have counters track it to the penny?

| lol I wish I could track it to the penny. I attempt to get 20 bucks per brinks box to store, but sometimes one might fall out of the box or one might get added by accident. Or whatever. Then I can count boxes to get an approx. total. I also weigh the box to make sure it is 13.8lbs, it if isnt, it gets recounted.(hasnt happened yet). |

Pennies pennies everywhere. Where to start....

| All I know is I'd have to spend most of a day hunting up and gathering all my 1/2 gallon jugs into one place. I really don't know how much I have... |

| I store in rubbermaid bins (not as stackable as I'd like). I have a CS-10 counter, but I am finding hand sorting coppers into Cdn by weight, and US Mem vs wheats to be incredably teadious. No idea how many I actually have. Maybe I should try counting them some time, but that would detract from my limited sorting time. Kind of odd for me to not count - I track most everything else in my life. |

| I put them in 1/2 gallon juice containers. I figure that there is about 16lb of copper or $25 face in each container. Some day I will round them all up and count them, but not now. So, long story short, I have no idea, other thanit isn't any where close to my goal. |

| I guess I am the most anal one here...lol. I put them into 500 count ziploc bags (verified by weighing on a scale), and then four of the 500-count bags go into a single white cardboard baseball card box. I use the boxes that hold 660 cards I think. They are very sturdy and stack very well. I happen to know to the penny how many are in my small hoard using this system. |

Depends on where it is in the process. For the ones that are currently being processed I have a good idea what the capacity of each container is. Once fully processed I run them through my fastest counter and put them in the bag. It takes 75 minutes of run time on the Mach 7 to fill a bag. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I have so few it doesn't matter. But for the few I am keeping I have squirreled them away--one here, one there. Sort of like our furry "tree rat" friends burying their acorns.

i'm something of a numbers freak...so i track my hoard down to the copper (penny that is).
I'm a handsorter who uses my grandkid to help. When we sort we end up with 4 piles...Cu...wheatie...1982...and zinc (maybe more if there is some canadian or something else in the box). The Cu, wheatie and 1982 get rolled up seperately and put back into $25 bank boxes while the zinc just gets dumped into an empty box. When I get a fair amount of zinc I make a run to my kids credit union and dump them into the coin machine.
To track my Ag and Cu hoard I made an excel spreadsheet. First column list the different varieties of coin ( war nickel, barber dime, mercury dime, roosevelt dime....wheat penny, copper penny etc). Second column lists the current melt value of the individual coin at whatever spot price I plug into box A1 for silver or box A24 for copper. Third column lists the actual quantity of coins in the hoard. Fourth column lists the troy ounces/pounds for the quantity of coins from 3rd column. Fifth column lists the melt value for that quantity of coins. Sixth column lists my cost for the coins. And the last column gives my potential % return.
Columns 3 through 7 are totaled. This gives me a total face value, weight, melt value, cost, and potential return for my hoard.
It looked alot better when I was plugging $17.60 and $3.50 into the spot price boxes. |

| I sort by hand. When I get 50 copper I roll em up. 50 rolls go back into the original "fed box". I've got 13 boxes full. 13x2500= 32,500 copper cents. The boxes stack neatly in a corner of my closet. My goal of 40 boxes (100,000 copper) should be reached in the year 2013. |

| For the most part I do track the number of cents I have. The ones boxed ($25) and bagged ($50) is what I track. Loose rolls I could track, but I wait until I have enough to complete a box. The same for loose cents: I wait til I have enough to bag. I have an excel sheet as well, but I got lazy and stop using it. I have begun a complete inventory this month so I can start next year with exact numbers. |

| I also track my hoard down to the penny. After a batch runs through the Ryedale it hits the separation boards where I pick out the Canadians and Wheats then goes directly into the Royal Sovereign and I babysit it till it poops out my rolls. The rolls go right back into the box they came in and get sealed up and stamped with the date that the box was filled. All of the pretty little sealed/stamped boxes go into my ever filling gun safe that I bought special for Cu storage. |
When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband. |

I put the copper in sandbags 60 lbs. per bag. 2 bags to a 5 gallon pail. I run 8,950 through the CS-10 counter to fill each bag in about 5 minutes. I hand roll the wheats and put them in penny boxes. It's pretty easy to count the buckets and boxes to get a total. |

| Same here with the numbers / spreadsheet, except I don't keep my copper in it. I just hand sort and hand roll and box $25 boxes of copper and stack them. So I have X boxes + <$25 loose. Close enough for me. In the spreadsheet I keep my other purchases and sort history so I know what I found on what day, then I carry it to the total Toz. & melt value. Also know to the penny my ave. cost. |
