I have talked a little about this in another thread but I figured this was an extraordinary event, that warranted a new thread. Last week, I bought several boxes of dimes. One box had 3 dimes which at the time was a record(for me). Another box had 7 dimes...another record. Monday, I went back to the same bank to try and get some more of the same kind of boxes (non-brinks) but the bank was out. I stopped at other banks and picked up a few boxes but after going one third the way into those boxes,...0 silver. I went this morning and got 2 more boxes from the bank that had ran out of the boxes I was looking for. I noticed that these boxes had the same date of inspection and the same inspector as did the 7 dime box. On the 6th roll of the first box, I found 2 silver dimes. I had never found more than one dime per roll. I stopped sorting and cut the inspection stamp out of the bottom of the box and took off towards the bank, stopping once to buy some candy for the tellers. I gave the candy to the teller that had sold me the 2 boxes with the desired inspection date earlier, and told her what I wanted to do. This was to buy all the boxes with that particular inspection date. They only had one more left but that was ok. I just finished the next box with the same number as the 7 dime box and it had a total of 32 silver dimes...31 roos and 1 merc. 2 rolls had 4 silver dimes each. Speaking for myself only, this is an extraordinary event. I have 2 more boxes of dimes with the same inpection date number as did today's phenomenal box. Up until these past few days, I have never found more than 2 dimes per box. I'm not sure what I have stumbled into, but I'm glad I did.

That is awesome. It would be interesting to know how they all ended up in circulation in such concentrated quantities. Congrats.

Bluegill, I have speculated about that. I figure that maybe someone turned in their coin collection all at once, and the bank they turned them into must have been putting together a dime return bag. The dimes then found their way to the money center's coin handling apparatus...I envision a large hopper where the coins come out at the bottom and are mechanically rolled, rolled, and placed in boxes. Then they are inspected and dated. I have went through two thirds of the other two boxes with the same date and so far I have found 7 more silver dimes. Not anything like the 32 dime box but it shows a connection of sorts between the boxes. One of the things that I have been thinking about is the fact that its likely that another box with the same inspection date is up front with one of the tellers. The thing is I have really been imposing on this particular bank lately. I don't want to mess up a good thing so I gotta let it go now and be satisfied with what I got.
