I didn't realize we'd borrowed more money from Japan than from China, assuming the blurb in today's Parade section of the newspaper is correct:

Countries That Own the Most U.S. Debt

Japan $585.9 billion
China $541.0 billion
United Kingdom $307.4 billion
OPEC Nations* $179.8 billion
Caribbean banking centers** $147.7 billion

China has dominated the news lately, but I remember when the Japanese were buying up everything in sight with the strong Yen (mid 80's to sometime in the 90's). Japanese bought our family company, but I also saw them buying hotels, office towers, gulf courses, all kinds of stuff.

Also, the Japanese were exporting high value, high quality items to North America (cars, electronics) while the Chinese were still doing cheap plastic flowers. The Japanese had a good head start on the export stuff and collect US dollars program, but I'd guess the Chinese are catching up fast.

I think those numbers refer only to private debt. I'm pretty sure that China holds over a trillion in treasury bills. (Public debt).
