I've received 2 pennies in the last week, which appear to be 100% zinc.

1982 weighing 2.48 grams
1983-D weighing 2.46 grams

Both pennies are a dull gray color in appearance.

I did the calculations on what a 100% zinc penny should weigh based on the density and I get 2.48 grams.

Have you considered having them graded? - They might be worth $omething.

They both grade about VF, and so I hadn't considered having them graded.

It could be that the copper was stripped off after they left the mint or it could be they were minted without copper plating in the first place.

Either way, they are worth something as curiosities.

I've found pure zinc pennies while walking on the street. They were covered in road salt and the salt seemed to have removed most of the copper coating.
