A guy I work with offered me two 3HP electric motors, never used, with cast iron frames. They weight 99lbs each. What do the yards pay for motors? Iron price, or more considering the copper windings in them? Just wondering what to expect before taking them in. Thanks in advance!

I am sure you will get alot of better responses from the more experienced members around here, but the scrap yards in my area only pay .10 a pound for ele. motors- which is terrible because the iron and steel scrap yards were paying .10 a pound for steel.

So if there is anyway to get the copper out, thats the way I would take, but I heard its darn near impossible.

Its possible I just finished a large 75 pounder. Hard to say without seeing it. Local yards around here pay between .20-.30 per pound.

if they are never used and work try ebay or craigslist first.

They are worth more as motors!
Don't scrap them, try to sell them to an electric shop or local repair emporium.
Put an add in the classified section of the local paper or put up a for sale sign at the local Agway (Farm/Hardware) store.
They're over $300 new. You should get $100 for them easy.
I'd have been happy to buy one at $100 (plus shipping) when I burned out the electric motor on my table saw.

There's profit if you melt things!!
