Can't tell if you overpaid unless we know the price you paid, and the grade, and if they are certified... |

Yeah, those are hardly what I would consider to be bullion coins...
For the $20 1897 gold eagle you are looking at $900+ on Flea-Bay if it is in good condition. So way more than melt... |

On the last dip I bought a nice AU $20 Double Eagle for $775. The coin does not contain a full ounce of gold, but is close. I love getting nice numismatic coins for close to melt. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

It is impossible to say for sure with out a grade, but $765 sounds like a good price to me.
By the way, as you said, they are only 90% gold, but they do weigh more than a troy ounce. The specifications says that they contains .96750 oz. of Pure Gold.
So multiply .96750 with the current gold spot price to calculate the melt value. But again I don't think anybody will want to melt it 100+ year old coin. Also, even the premium on a 2008 gold eagle is $40 over spot right now!

It wouldn't hurt to get it slabbed, but from what I can tell most people don't bother to get them slabbed unless the are close to uncirculated or better, but I would try to give it an unofficial grade yourself either by comparing it to other similar coins or by finding some grading guidelines for it. |
