Have to check your local laws there. There are alot of bad pollutants in the smoke they say and the practice is illegal in many areas. The way is real easy though. Build a fire, throw your wire on, let it burn out. Smack it around a little when done to knock off burnt crud. The wrapping burns well once going, it is plastic ya know.
The silver [is] mine, and the gold [is] mine, saith the LORD of hosts. Hag 2:8 [/b] He created it. He controls it. He gave it to us for His use. Why did we turn from sound scriptural currency that PROTECTS us?
I told you how to burn it in your build a stripping machine thread. Lots of scrap wood, poke and turn often. 3 or 4 hours took care or a full (crammed down) 55 gallon drum. Pull it out of the ashes the next day and stomp it into a big wad. The more you scuff it up the more color shows and it looks better. Beer and friends are optional. You are right about it feeling a bit 3rd world, though.
Yea, I appreciate the explanation but I don't feel good burning that crap. A wire stripper sounds like the only semi decent way to get pure copper without burning more rubber than a Iraqi war ridden city!
Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
The amount of pollution will be less than torching a car tire. Way more Karma points than protesters in the Middle East torching things or bras burned at the last Helen Reddy concert (It's probably been a while for that one). In the Grand Scope of things you'll probably add more positive energy to the Universe by the reduction in the amount of pollution created from mining and refining that amount of Cu versus what you create from frying the insulation and recycling. If it's really old and covered in asbestos insulation all bets are off!
1. Get some cut proof gloves, the kind they sell if you want to filet fish (K-Mart had them in the sporting goods store with fishing supplies) 2.Wear work gloves over the cut proof gloves to give you a good grip. 3. clamp the wire in a vise and strip away with a utility knife. Sometimes the insulation will peel right off when you strip off enough of it.
Could a stripping machine be home made? It would simply be hinges with different sized screw holes that would be clamped in a vise. The machine part would be the recycler pulling the wire through the screw holes. Maybe the holes could be sharpened with a round file to make it work better.
