I know this is way way way off topic and I hope everyone is cool with that.
Does anyone know who buys used motor oil? The local auto part stores around my area allow you to bring in your used oil for free.
I think there are a couple possible reasons for this:
1) They use it as a loss leader, a way to eliminate the hardest thing about changing your oil (thats the disposal of it) and keep you coming back.
OR
2) They are selling it and making money off it.
OR
3) Both...
Does anyone know if you can sell used oil and if so to who??

I had read something last year about the idea of burning used oil in oil heaters (this was from a free paper that was offering used Mac Trucks for sale.)

| I visited a large road construction company a while back. All their used oil is saved and heats thier shops. They had a 15,000 gallon tank and a 2,000 gallon tank. |

I personally know of two people who have heaters that burn used motor oil. My work gives one of them all our motor oil. One of my bosses works on it for him. I think that a lot of the larger diesel mechanic shops store the used oil and use it to heat their shops.

| I would be interested in knowing more about how much oil they burn per hour and the effectiveness of them. Most of the newer runs burn just under 1 gallon an hr for around 250K BTU. I wounder if the older ones are just as efficient. |

I'm sure they sell it and make a little money. Another part of it may be that they _have_ to or are _strongly encouraged_ to by the environmental police. There are lots of people that will take your used oil for free, but I don't know of any one that buys it. Of course I rarely have more than 4-5 quarts at a time anyway...

That was my next question, how does it burn. I also wondered if it was legal in all states or not.
I was wondering if NOTABIGDEAL has been around one and if so what its like.
(CLWP yes, I just got it. I am still getting used to checking that ohh so very small NEW PM icon. I am used to forums just slamming it in my face  )

| motor oil can be recycled and used again. The oil change places, the truck comes up and just puts it through filters and adds addatives to the oil...that's all the valvoline truck does. |

B-Power-B, never seen one personally. I can ask my boss about the specific details as he works on it. If you have access to enough oil, I can see how it would be effective for heating at least a shop/garage or whatever.

I found a old used waste oil burner for sale that is fairly close to me. I am considering making the drive and picking it up.
I wish I knew if the old ones were just as efficient as the new ones. This one is at least 20 years old! |

Hmm... Okay well I would feel safe to say that as of now most places that sell motor oil also take used motor oil, but not because its profitable. Most likely they are forced/recommended by law to do so.
So for those who face steady streams of used motor oil, we have reached one conclusion:
Burn it through waste oil heaters/waste oil air conditioners.
As much as I like the idea of burning it, I feel there is also a way of selling it or reconditioning it for resale. |

I just picked up a waste oil heater off Ebay. Its fairly old and I dont know much about it but I feel like I got an okay deal considering the cost of new ones. Its fairly close to my parents house so I am hoping my dad will want to make a little trip to pick it up.
I guess I have to figure out fuel line and pump. Im kinda excited about it, I just hope and pray the damn thing works! 
What do you guys think??

| If you get it to work it will be great. Now you have to figure out where to get extra used oil from. Probably wouldn't hurt to ask places that change a lot of their own oil: transit / trucking places, anyone with a fleet of vehicles. |

I'm not worried about getting the oil. I am mostly worried about what else I need to get this thing up and running. I guess I wont know until I receive the unit.
So I guess I just hook my oil drum up to the heater and plug it in??? Ill have to vent it as well I guess.

I suspect you'll need to filter it. A funnel, cheap coffee filters, and a large receiving vessel should do it. Maybe build a stand to have your dirty oil on tap, with a tap, to run through your filter into the clean container. Don't want to foul up your burner with leaves and dead bugs and whatnot.

| You can also get an inline oil filter from a marine store and some auto parts stores... basically a fitting with two ports and a standard automotive screw-on filter stuck on the bottom. This will help keep smaller things (metal shavings, etc) out of your burner nozzle. |
Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead? |
