Silver in the research/experimental phase- small quantities were used, but small quantities used today may mean large quantities used in the future.

Invisibility metamaterials research breakthrough

...The press have dubbed metamaterials as the enabling technology for “invisibility cloaks”, though scientists have been less enthusiastic to throw around the term, stressing that such an application is, for the moment, well out of reach.

Less publicized are the potential applications metamaterials could have in high-resolution optical microscopes, antenna performance, and nanocircuits for high-powered computers – not as exciting as something from Harry Potter, but probably more important.

The two breakthroughs have just reported separately in the journals Nature and Science. The metamaterial described in the Nature paper was created by stacking alternating layers of silver and non-conducting magnesium fluoride. A nanoscale fishnet pattern was then cut into the layers. Each pair of conducting and non-conducting layers creates a circuit – the cumulative effect of the circuits is to bend the magnetic field from incoming light with wavelengths as short as 1500 nanometers.

....The metamaterial described in the Science journal is composed of silver nanowires grown inside porous aluminum oxide. The structure is more than 10 times the size of a wavelength of light, making it a bulk metamaterial. This form of metamaterial bent red light wavelengths as short as 660 nanometers, making it the first demonstration of bulk media bending visible light backwards.

....Previous metamaterials in the optical range would need to vibrate at certain frequencies to achieve negative refraction, leading to strong energy absorption. Resonance is not a factor in both the nanowire and fishnet metamaterials."
***************************
It appears silver is the "silver bullet" in making these new metamaterials. Any new use can only mean higher demand in the future.

And yet another use-
(Sorry I didn't post this sooner as I only found it on the web today.)

Samsung set to launch Silver Nano Wash system that kills 99% of bacteria

August 31, 2005 Samsung’s Silver Nano Health System has been applied to a new range of front-loader washing machines that are launching later this year in Australia. A breakthrough function, ‘Silver Wash’, kills 99 percent of bacteria in the wash load and coats the clothes with antibacterial protection which lasts for up to 30 days. To feature on five flagship front-loader models from 5kg to 7.5kg capacity, Samsung’s patented Silver Wash is the first technology that combines disinfectant and antibiotic properties in washing machines. When activated, the Silver Wash releases up to 400 billion silver ions during the first wash and the last rinse cycle. After the wash cycle is completed, Samsung claims that the washed clothes are totally devoid of bacteria. Whereas some other brands use a silver ion coating on the washing machine drum, Samsung claims its approach is far more effective as it ensures that all parts of the clothes are penetrated with the silver ions, rather than short-term surface contact by only some of the clothes on an otherwise silver ion coated drum.

I remember reading some time ago about how people use to put a silver coin in milk to keep it fresh... after searching a little I found this site that goes into all sorts detail about the uses of silver.

This article explains why my sister always said a silver spoon rubbed on a cold sore a few times a day makes it heal noticeably faster.

The term "born with a silver spoon in his/her mouth" has medicinal roots. Most everybody thinks it just means being born into wealth, that is true, but only part of the whole reason.

Back during the dark ages when disease was running rampant thru Europe, silver spoons were put in the mouth upside down to get maximum contact on the tounge. This was done for antibiotic reasons to prevent catching an illness. Much in the same way a Ag dollar could prevent spoilage of milk.

Of course back then who could afford silver flatware.., the wealthy. It was a resentment filled statement that somebody was fortunate enough to be born into a family that could afford a preventative medicine to prevent illness and death - a silver spoon in the mouth.
