Up until here recently, I had only been hoarding wheats. It was easy to sort through a box. For each roll, I would replace the one or two wheats (although I usually get 0) with one or two nonwheats. That way I could just throw the pennies back into the $50.00 dollar plastic bags my bank gives me. I went into a $50.00 bag I had sorted the wheats out but not the coppers and decided to get the coppers out. This was hard and took a heck of a long time. I took out 941 coppers and those had to be replaced with 941 non-coppers. Lets just say the it took hours. I have one more bag that I need to do that with. I know it will be easier when I sort the nonwheat coppers out at the same time I get the copper wheats out. I shouldn't be complaining. My bank lets me bring in pennies for cash without rolling them up. I put them in those heavy duty plastic bags you have seen. Any tips on making sorting easier would be appreciated.

Probably a lot of us here would suggest that you get a Ryedale. Makes it a whole lot faster and easier if you're going to be sorting large amounts of pennies like a lot of us on here. I've had to cut back to about $300 a week recently because of my work schedule, but the Ryedale is able to sort these in less than two hours of actual machine sorting time. A Ryedale will pay for itself in a few weeks.

The other option would be if you live near another hoarder you might work out a deal to use his Ryedale for quick sorting. Where are you from Dan?

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Yes get a Ryedale. Even hand sorting you will learn the different look of copper vs zinc and that will speed you up. Another way is to get a cheap jewelry scale ($10 maybe) and pass the coins over the scale.

Also forget about counting the dump coins because the search and replace process is slowing you down. Just weigh the bag on a reasonably accurate scale and top up with zinc to reach the ideal weight. Someone here can tell you what a $50 bag of zinc weighs.

Another way is to seperate your copper and zinc and wheats into three containers. Count the copper and wheats all at once at the end of your $50 bag, then add that total to your zinc pile to rebag and dump.

To speed up counting you could get a coin counter - I have a CS-10 and there is/was one for sale in the Buy Sell Trade section here.

I just wish I could buy and dump coin without unrolling and rerolling it! A highspeed roller may yet be in my future.

I ain't gonna be able to run with the big dogs on this forum. I can't afford a rydale. I'm still gonna have some fun though. I went to two banks today and got two boxes ($25) and $10 in loose rolls. The first box was a real bummer with only 3 wheats and two of those were practically destroyed. The $10 loose rolls (non-fed) had one wheat and 6 dimes! I get a mini thrill when that happens.

Get an Apprentice. It's cheaper. Talk to Andy Redlon (Ryedale here on the forums) about it.

I get a thrill when I find dimes in rolls too. I also love finding wheats.

The beauty of this hobby is that you can play at whatever level you are comfortable with. You don't need all that fancy equipment to participate.

What have your copper percentages been running and what part of the country are you from?

I'm with Hoard, play at any level you are comfortable with. I only sort a few American pennies as I find them in Canada. Must be up to a hundred wheats or so now, need to count them up, but it sure is fun to find those wheats and kings.

I only sort a few Canadian cents also.. but I love finding the kings also.. especially George V.

One cheap way to improve your sorting speed is to get a digital scale.. they don't cost very much. It is the best improvement you can make without going to a machine. My sort rate doubled when I switched from eyeballing each penny to doing them with the digital scale.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

So are the majority of people here continuing to hoard without reselling any of their coppers?

I'm in sell phase right now. Almost every bag I pick up has around 35% copper pennies in it. So if I want more copper pennies every $50.00 bag I pick up has $17.00 + copper cents in it. Once the percentage starts to drop drastically then I might start hoarding some for myself.

My unscientific guess is that there are more sellers then streight hoarders, but that the steight hoarders are generally doing more actual volume. Some also wade into the copper pool and buy from others on occasion. Hoard is the obvious exception as he hoards, buys and sells - a regular jack of all pennies. I personally have sold enough to fund my equipment purchases and traded for some silver, but generally I'm on the hoard until the price goes up more. This is one of the better investments available to me at the moment with a built in minimum 50%+ bump in market value on every coin saved. I figure every time a teller hands me a penny box (50% copper) I just made about 10 bucks or so. Nickel boxes are worth about $15 profit everytime I buy one. (of course there is fun work involved to extract that profit, but I do all that on my off time from my normal job).
