I have some stainless steel counter top sheets and some sinks. I know they are stainless but have some rust "dust" on the outside of some of the sinks. What SHOULD I expect from my scrap yard?

Also, I have an old copper tank. As you can see its got some paint on it. Will they categorize this as #2?

Thanks guys for the input!

deifinitely test with magnet

sometimes the rust could of been where it rested against metal

copper will probably only get #2

I took a magnet to it, its defiantly stainless. The sinks had steel pipes that were connected to them. I don't know if the rust somehow transfer to the sinks over time or what???

All I know is that they are for sure stainless. The grinder makes them spark, and they are not magnetic.

The copper will probably get #2. Do you think it might improve your odds of getting #1 if you were to hit the painted areas with one of those wire brush wheels on a drill to clean it up?

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I was wondering about that too. I was also thinking about some paint stripper. I hate using harsh chemicals but I think I have some and it wont take much.
Then again I also just bought a back of those metal bristle brushes.

Ill try and find time to do that tomorrow and Ill defiantly post my results.

Does anyone think Ill have a hard time getting clean prices on the stainless steel?

One trick is steel wool and a torch. Heat the copper up with the torch and use the steel wool to scrape the paint off. Works well. Worth the work? maybe, not to me. I'd just take it in as #2.

Yeah, well the thing weights over a 100lbs. I just got done explaining to my brother how sorting pennies is not a job but a hobbie for me. If my hobbie can make me some money well thats cool. I think at the level I am at, I just have to be careful how much time I spend on things. In this case due to the weight of the copper tank, I can justify spending 15 mins turning it from #2 to #1.

Hopefully it will work in that amount of time, otherwise I will cut my losses and take the #2 price.

stainless should be no problem

around here copper #1 and #2 is only 10 to 15 cents difference if its 100 pounds is it worth the 10 to 15 dollars to bother cleaning it

Where I live they dropped the #1 copper prices all together. All copper is #2 and pays really high for that matter too ($2.60-$2.80).

Stainless is .50-.65 a pound here.

Just for the record, I attached a wire brush attachment to a cordless drill and it took some paint off the copper, but I didn't more than a minute on it. I had other things to do :)

I sure as heck wish I had $2.6-2.8 for all my copper. That sure would pay off me for the load I have right now.

Last month my stainless prices were $.70 and copper #2 was $2.20

call around to multiple scrap yards for best pricing

most scrap ards are somewhat negotiable if you have large quantities. For instance if you find some one 45-60 minutes away paying better just see if your yard will match the price.

Thats what I normally do. I usually am the one with the largest load. But then again I have the meth heads in front of me cashing in a single car rim or 8 lbs or aluminum cans.

Iv learned that its also how you present your stuff. For instance: I usually bundle up the nicest wire and stick those bundles on the top.

Has anyone else seen better luck with how you present it?

If you have piles, better stuff on top won't hurt. That is what I do with wire. They look inside and see the wire with the best on top. Usually I get paid as if all the wire was like the top wire.

For the record they took all my wire and the copper tank as COPPER #2. Paid $2.70 lb.
The stainless steel was not a problem either. All was considered clean and I even snuck in a few sinks that still had a steel pipe connected to it

It kinda really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed me off because I had clean copper pipe that was tainted green and the guy at the desk told me that it was old pipe and considered #2. I dunno, it did have some solder on it where some other copper pipe was welded to.

I went to a different yard this time. It seemed a bit cluster-f***ed, but they were more honest and paid well.

No #1 category! Man-o-man. To be #1 it doesn't have to be shiny, just no tape, solder, etc. It can be green. Can I ask where you are located?

The Seattle Area. I thought my #2 price was ok, which compensated for not having #1. Plus I only had 50 lbs max
