I am new here and have a few questions.
1. I have been saving pre 1982 pennies, but with 1982-present pennies value on the rise do you guys save these as well?
2. Since nickels are now worth more than face value. Do you just got to the bank and get like $50.00 in nickels and just set them aside?
3. I am not sure if this question pertains to this forum but I saw on coinflation that quarters from 1964 and earlier are worth like over $2.00 in silver. Are these at all common, do you guys get rolls of quarters to search for these?
Thanks for any help

Welcome jblavit.
I do not save the zinc pennies at this time however many here save them all. I also do not save nickels. As far as your question about quarters the chances are very slim now of finding 90% silver coin in the rolls from the bank. I was getting rolls of halves and searching them for awhile and I got a few 90% coins and some 40% but I had to go through a lot of halves. There is a better chance of finding silver halves IMO than other coin because the halves are not circulated as much.

Hi,
I am not saving the 1982-presents, yet. That's a big yet, they are close to being honest money as well, and like O.K. said some people do save them. If zinc continues to rise I might start too.
I have started saving nickels in a small way. I keep all the ones I get in change, and I have picked up a few rolls.
I tried searching for 90% silver dimes, quarters, and halves a few years ago. I bought a bunch of rolls, and I found one silver dime, no quarters, and about 4 40% silver halves. It is possible, but they are few and far between. I guess it is worth it if you really enjoy searching rolls.

Thanks so much for the help. Approximately how many rolls did you search before finding the halves or dimes? |

I did not keep real good track but I probably searched around 200 rolls of halves. I got I think 14 90% halves and about 90 40% halves. I traded these to a friend for silver rounds. Out of the 14 90%s I only got 2 Franklins the rest were Kennedys.

That's about $222 in risk-free profit on your $5000. Not bad, considering you have to hold about 14,000 coppers to get the same return.

I did not state earlier that I got most of the silver ones on the first hits at the five banks that I bought from. It seemed that the halves that I got first had been laying around for awhile. As I bought more the percentages dropped.

Wait, I did the math wrong.
half dollars are in 20 rolls, which means you main $222 on $2000 investment. And you struck silver 104 times in 4000 tries, for a 2.6% hit rate, or roughly one silver every other roll.

The last couple times that I bought halves that came from the Fed I only got a couple 40%ers out of 10 rolls.

Welcome. I buy $100 Brinks boxes of nickels at the bank. It's the lazy way of hoarding. I sort pennies that I get in my change, but if and when I go big time with pennies I'll most likely just buy the boxes and weigh them and wait for zinc to go higher too or get that new penny sorting machine.
