I've been to our local scrap yard two times so I'm new at this. The first time I brought in an old transmission I found at a dumpster by the roadside. At 153 pounds I got 7 bucks. When they helped me get it out of the truck someone said if I had broken the nuts they'd gave me fifty cents a pound...now I'm stoked!
So I pick up all the scrap I can find on the way home from work (mostly steel) I take it apart in the back-yard, remove everything plastic, rubber, nuts, bolts, wire...everything so it's "clean" metal. After about two weeks I have a nice size collection 190 pounds of steel and some alluminum. I brought the steel in this morning and I got 8 bucks. Did I get ripped off or am I doing something wrong?

| That seems a little low, but I'm no expert. The last time I was at the scrapyard (back in the spring) mixed steel was 10 cents/pound. |

That is what about $84 a ton? That is crazy low. If I were you, I would try to get a ton and then call around to see who will give you the best price.

| There is a Place here in orlando Called Tampa Core. They are offering 20 dollars for trannys. Basic steel around here is being bought for 10- 10.50$ a hundred lbs. Shop around Get out the yellow pages. I have a price list here. Carbs 2.00 Batteries 5.00 Ac compressors 4.00 Starters 5.00 Electric motors. .20 a lb. Etc. Good luck next time. |

Hi Robb, I think you definitely got ripped off, from what I can tell anyway. You should have received irony cast prices, which was around .20/lb the last time I got paid for it. The only requirement was that the oil was removed. I've never recycled transmissions, but I have recycled entire engines. They were mostly cast aluminum, with some iron still attached.
As for your second trip, if it was clean steel, they might want a certain minimum to get the better prices. That's how it is here, the company I use. They take small quantities of clean iron/steel, but they only pay a few cents a pound. If you have a large quantity, they recommend another company. The GM there told me they only do this for customer convenience. To help out the customers who only have a few pounds of iron/steel. Like I said, they actually do recommend a different company to take your iron/steel to.
It looks like you got about 4 cents a pound for your 190 pounds of steel, I'm not sure what the current price is right now, but that sounds kinda low. Another thing, they might be a middle man, they resell their stuff to someone else in larger quantities, they get paid more.
This is what I would do, I would call them and ask them what they are paying for irony aluminum and for iron/steel. I'd ask them about minimum requirements, at what weight does the price go up, etc. I'd also ask them how they classify different items, etc.
After that, I'd call around to see if there were other companies buying this stuff and what they're paying.

$.8/lb #2 ins copper wire
$2.8/lb #2 copper
$1.7/lb clean yellow brass
$.06/lb "steelcase battery" - lead acid batteries
$.55/lb sheet aluminum
$200/ton mixed iron
lucky that I saw this, as I dont go to the scrap yard often, but got a call from my cousin saying he was going down and if I had anything. |

$2.20/lb Copper #2
$.60/lb Coper wire
$.75/lb Aluminum Sheet
$.35/lb Aluminum Wire
$.25/lb Aluminum Irony
$.70/lb Stainless Steel
$15 each Catalytic Converter
$230/ton Steel |

check out scrap converters on ebay when you get a chance
make lots more than most scrap yards |

| I was not happy with the cat. converter price. I've seen how much they go on ebay for but I thought those were from older vehicles with heavy precious metal content. In the meantime I am going to save my cats until I know more about how to fetch optimal prices on ebay |

Yeah, I felt better about it this time.
In the past I have just taken it and let them load it and "take control". This time I called around and got different yards prices. Then I paid attention to what was going on and took my list of prices. I felt like I did not get bent over this time.... I wanted to post it to get feedback but I know its kinda hard when you guys cant see what I turned in. |

another thing i will do is ask how much they are paying on each item before it is taken off the truck. If i dont like the price i dont take it off the truck.
I also ask them to tell me if there is an item they see that will bring the price down let me know ahead of time so i can remove it if necessary.
just remember the stuff belongs to you and you get to choose if you want to sell it for their price. Dont feel pressured to sell if you dont like the price |

I unloaded everything and then they gave me a hand written ticket with all the scale weighs. I then took my price list and he asked what he quoted me on each of the metals. I told him and he usually gave me the lower price of the quote. (ex. he quoted over the phone $.60-.65 a lb for dirty aluminum sheet. He gave me .60)
While at the yard I saw mother boards there. I just called and he quoted $.60 LB for them as long as they were out of computers only.
For those with experience, would it be dumb if I just took it for $.60 LB rather than messing with Ebay and PayPals fees???? |

Well...I personally like to sell the boards on Ebay. In general you can get around .85 to 1.00 per pound, especially if you have a lot of boards to sell.
Make sure when you sell boards though that you remove the processor, aluminum heat sink and RAM chips. Most people don't expect to get those parts when they buy boards and you can sell the pulled parts for good cash.
The major problem with boards is shipping. If you charge too much for shipping, people won't buy. In general I get a large flat rate box and try to cram in at least 7 pounds of material. Sometimes you can cut the boards in half however let the buyer know.
Check the market too. If you see multiple ads for boards, wait for a bit then sell. Also, if you really want to get technical, wait until gold has a good run on the commodoties market.

I just do not see the point in selling mother boards on Ebay. You say you get $.85-$1 LB, and you try to cram 7LBS per auction?? By the time it takes to take good pictures, then post it on ebay, pay all the fees... It cant be worth it the way I am seeing it. Why not just advise that I save the time and take it to the yard for $.60 LB?
This is the type of auction I have been seeing. Is this generally what you get in your auctions? Perhaps I need to see a good example of how to do it.

this got off topic fast.
Where i go is like the largest yard in town. then there are smaller setups in the different neighborhoods that buy your scrap and resell it to the bigger yard. I know guys that go to the closer, smaller setup and they get maybe half of what I get, but convenience has a price. The smaller place also will take anything, no questions asked. |
