After going thru a box of pennies my hands are pretty nasty afterwards. My dad worked for the post office and he said more germs are spread via mail and money than any other means. Based on the way my hands look after sorting I believe him. The wife thinks that the pennies are making me sick, because I have a sinus infection right now. I get these sinus infections all the time, even before I started hoarding. She will no longer let my grandkids help with sorting because they don't wash their hands properly. They are 4 and 7.

Your wife seems very anti-sorting/hoarding. I always wash my hands when I'm done with my pennies. In fact, I should sort some today....

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. | I use an antibacterial soap, followed by something like germ-x. I've never been sick. I can see how many germs could be spread though. |

get a box of disposable gloves and let the kids wear them to help you sort. You could get a dust mask if you think that will calm down your wife |

I use latex gloves. If I'm out and still have some sorting to do I just wash my hands really good before I touch anything else. Have your grandkids wear gloves.
If you saw some of the places I've found coins you would never want to touch them bare handed again...
I'm one who will pick up a penny, but I have left dimes where I found them because of the surrounding enviroment.

An acquaintence of mine is a privy digger. Need I say more? You should see all the goodies he finds in those holes. |

This is exactly how the wild Indian pathogen is spread. Those of us who wash our hands post sorting are just fine. It can take awhile to wash off all the "penny black." However, many don't wash their hands, or not well enough, and they become infected. If you start to believe in Santa Claus, or wild Indians for goodness sake, it may be too late for you.
I wash with an antibacterial soap following sorting. Just think of all the nasty hands, and some of those sick hands, that our coins have been through. |

Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

You know that copper metal acts as a natural antibacterial surface!??
I doubt that 'intact zinc cents' or copper cents even have germs on them. The grime on them may be dirt, but I would guess that it is free from living organisms.
Sounds like an undergraduate Biology research project! (possibly even a doctorate thesis??) |

Wear latex rubber gloves if you are concerned. You can get a whole box of these at the drug store for a few dollars.
I found one of those Mercury coated 1964 pennies from some science kit experiment way back when. Tossed it in the trash. |

My 8 year old daughter has helped me every night for 6 months!
Mo sickness in this house..
although I am getting sick of lugging them up and down my stairs (I knew I should have installed an elevator in this house)
I would be more concerned about your grand kids going deaf!... make sure you have sound muffeling ear muffs (for sport shooting works great)

| The copper is germicidal but yea I do get the sniffles occasionally these days, usually that's when I gargle my homemade colloidal silver and sort more copper. |
