I just went to a local fair and talked with the horse shoe blacksmith. He had a tiny propane fueled, brick lined furnace that had a max temp of 2400 F. It had openings on two sides, one small and one large. It would heat horse shoe bar stock to almost white hot in short order.

Does smelting copper require some type of flux to prevent oxidation?
Can anyone post a link on home smelting of copper for the novice? I'm a metal worker by trade so I know the basics when it comes to safety, etc. I'd like to start ingot making with the scrap I get from the junk I see around the home/garage sales.

Thanks

Has anyone ever done this? I was wondering about flux use on brass/ copper. How do you pour the metal into the ingot molds? Thanks

The link he posted is the best for what you ask. I use 20 mule team borax for all my fluxing needs. Everything from welding cable damascus to 80%Ag/20%Cu melts for special knife guards.
