Does anybody know anything about this set. I tried a google search, but didn't turn up anything even remotely useful. My numismatic knowledge is incredibaly limited.
Is it legit? If so, what vintage? The coins are 1881S, 1884O, 1886, 1887, 1899O. The case if felt covered steel. The tray is felt covered plastic. There are 19th century coins in a box made in the 20th century. Would the U.S. Mint ever had done something like that?

This is the bottom left coin.

This is the center coin.

On a related note. The above coins and the following coins, what grade would they be. I have a feeling maybe sorta what they would be, but there are a lot more experienced folks on this forum whose opinion I would trust more.
This coin is not part of the above set.

Thanks.

| I'd call the Morgans at least AUs, but it really is impossible (for me at least) to grade unc from a picture. Can't tell about the set though. |

That's not an offering from the mint. The empty case was probably made by a third party, and you could fill it with whatever coins you wanted. Kinda like cases for 'My Birthday Year' or ones with a western theme that have indian head cents and buffalo nickels. The nice case is probably worth a few dollars. Morgan dollars, if genuine and not rare dates, are probably worth $15-20 each.

Presentation cases like this are frequently used by hucksters to make potential buyers think that the coins are extremely rare. Offerings like this could be sold at $450-600 and, of course, don't forget the immense shipping and handling charges. These are usually advertised "Hidden deep within our vaults for decades, a msssive hoard of America's most treasured coin, the Morgan Silver Dollar, is now being offered to a select group of United States citizens."
Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap.
If it's Morgan dollars that you want, a reputable dealer will sell you AU-UNC Morgans (common dates, of course, for about $25 each. Plenty of money left over after that transaction to buy a little gold or some silver bullion.
Run away fast from this "deal" if you still can. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

As much as I wish they were, they are not mine.
I figured something wasn't quite right about this. Sadly, the individual who bought these some time ago is susceptible to these types of things. She is open to selling them, but I don't know if I want to pay $25 a pop for them. I would rather sort halves and pay face...
