There are about 291,699 BU 3.11 gram pennies in a US (2000 pound) ton. So ballpark circulated, 295-300K pennies...which means about $3000 face will put you over...wow! I would have guessed it was a lot more than that to make a ton...of course I may have calculated wrong--anyone want to double check? If I am right, then a ton is really quite doable! (Money wise doable--maybe someone can figure out how much space it would take up--that may not work for many of us).

OK--so according to the MegaPenny Project (the link is in the links forum) a cubic foot of pennies is about 50,000 pennies...so 300K would be about 6 cubic feet...hmmmm...1 X 1 X 6 feet, or 2 X 3 X 1 feet...interesting...

Surprising how small a footprint a ton has if packed properly.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I believe in a world where we do not judge a hoarder by the size of thier hoard,
I believe in a world where we give props to those who hoard with style, not just weight
Oh, and I have no idea if I'm at a ton yet, but I doubt it. Too busy sorting and filling bins to count or weight. Maybe if I stopped posting here so much...

LOL!!

Right- judge not lest ye be judged....
What's the point in hoarding anyway?:
To accumulate mass quantities.

If you're not a hoarder, you're merely searching.

Cowboy wisdom: Never ask a man the size of his spread. (Or in this instance, the size of his hoard.) I should get some style points, however, as the "back forty" is stored in old cent mint bags at $50 to the bag.

Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Also then anyone in the world can see how much you have. Thats why I didnt post how close I was.... Not that I know an exact amount .

A five gallon bucket holds almost $300. Then if you add the 1.9 lbs for the plastic bucket...

I'm getting close but not quite there yet. Another month should put me over the top.

Then I'll have to see about selling some copper to finace future purchases of unsorted pennies.

You are right. But for the sake of handling, 120 lbs. is even pushing it. You can't pick it up because the handle tears out. At 180 lbs., the sides bulge. You have to move them by handcart even at 120.

I really don't care if someone knows how much I have. If they could figure out a way to steal it from me, they deserve it.
$3000 in currency will fit in your pocket. $3000 in pennies is a different story. They may have to reason with a cur dog or two. They are more tolerant than me- so don't wake me up!

My five gallon buckets have 6, 20 lb. bags of copper pennies each, worth $29.00 face or $174.00 per bucket.

Good point. And, the thief would have to worry about the Texas Castle law now on the books. One just can't move very fast trying to carry even $100 in pennies. Cur dogs might be taking an a-- bite every step or two.

That is why I like 1 ton bags.. that way they at least have to bring a forklift or pallet jack to steal it.

Come to think of it, I could use one of those around here- I'll put hay in it and leave it in the pasture.
