these happen to be from a large insurance company who upgrade every couple of years regardless of condition.
when i get large quantities, especially from this type of customer, i usually sign some form of contract. For instance this contract states that i can resell anything except harddrives which have to be physically destroyed. Anything resold has to have asset tags removed. All items have to be disposed of following local, state, and federal. Basically i cant throw the monitors in the dumpster.
I usually send out letters of interest to schools and other businesses and include my prices and prices of local computer recyclers. Most places want 5-10 dollars per unit for removal. I usually pay 1.00 per tower and charge 2,00 per monitor and dispose of printers, cables, keyboards and such at no charge. |

Thats a good idea. They get a contract insuring peace of mind that their content on the hard drives will be destroyed and you get all the computers, printers and ect.

Do you sell the ink cartridges? They sell on ebay and also you can sell them to local refill shops. A local business around me buys ones that have not been refilled for $2 and refilled for $1 ( I think those are the right prices). They sell on ebay for higher. Just a thought. |

Are all green circuit boards worth saving in one big pile? What about the tan colored ones? I took a part a microwave for fun last night. It had two green boards and one tan. I didn't see any gold plated pins or fingers. Save the greens and toss the tan or toss them all?
Thanks |

Are these gold fingers?? I am unsure of what to do with this circuit board. If I cut the fingers off is the board still worth anything? Or is it best to sell the board as is with the fingers?

Nice board if they are gold. What kind of board is that?

| It came out of a older alarm server box. I have two just like it along with many other boards. How do I tell if they are gold or not? |

those are gold plated pins, fingers are whats found on a video/sound card . Best place to sell is ebay with great pics it will get a good price
I do sell ink cartridges that i come across. Usually to a local guy who only buys certain ones. The rest he will take but just wont pay for. He also takes toner cartridges. there are also several places online to sell these to if you do a google search.
Most green circuit boards are worth saving. especially those from computers. Most tan and other power supply boards are worthless. there are some things on them valuable but not the board itself.
I am currently getting up to 1.00 per pound for regular circuit boards, 2-5.00 per pound for memory, 2-3.00 per pound for "cards" , 15 -50.00 per pound for cpu chips |

I have a question for you board scrappers. In my industry I come across quite a few boards from furnaces. There can't possibly be a reason to save them is there? I wouldn't think they have anything of value. What do you guys think?

They probably do, as we give the whole furnaces to an old guy. But I'll start pulling the boards if I can get confirmation.

For circuit boards, even from microwaves and furnaces, will vary by scrapyards. I'd consider those 'lo value' circuit boards. Same with vcrs and stereos. Some don't take any electronics, some only take nice boards from computers, and some take all. As for why they are worth anything, it's mostly because of the copper. There's a host of other metals along for the ride, but the copper value is what makes it worthwhile to recycle even the low grade boards. I think of it like other copper breakage such as motors and transformers. Don't pay much per pound but add up.
I've heard of platinum thermocouples in furnaces, but I was under the impression that was for industrial (HOT HOT HOT) furnaces, not the household type. No reason to use platinum unless the cheaper ones can't stand the heat. But I really don't know.

Thanks I will take a look tonight and save all of my green boards from now one. Taking apart that microwave was something else. Lots of cool stuff in there including the biggest solid hunk of copper that I have ever seen. It was part of the gun mechanism that shoots out the microwaves.
It also had a couple of massive transformers with what looked like huge copper windings, but on closer inspection it was all copper plated wiring. Besides that there was a gold colored mesh (brass I think) that I assume acted like some kind of sheild near where the gun entered the microwave and lots of other bits of metal that I couldn't 100% identify. Some maybe solid nickel as they were highly magnetic yet didn't spark on the grinder.
I assume that I should just start a transformer pile and sell them whole be the pound or maybe I should lump them with electric motors or sort them depending on if they have solid copper windings or plated?

| I just picked up 5 old computers from a guy I know through work. He had them lying around and wanted to get rid of them, so I grabbed them. They look like early Pentium era machines, came with all the power cords and wires, everything! The bummer was that I had to take the monitors toom but I'm not screwing with those. I'm going to cut the power cords off them and drop them off at my local transfer station - they take them for nothing. Here I go!! |
