At a coin dealer today I spotted what I thought was a piece of gold jewelry in the coin display case. I asked the coin dealer why it was in with the coins instead of the jewelry case (he sells estate jewelry too.) He told me that the object was a 2 ½ gold coin that had been filed down and made into a watch fob. The reason he could tell that it was a coin at one time was the reeded edge that only a cold coin would have. He also told me that the wealthy and well to do had jewelers turn one dollar gold coins into watch fobs and 2 ½ gold into cuff links. Talk about flaunting your wealth! This was of course a time when a worker took home anywhere from fifty cents to three dollars a WEEK! Gold has always been the standard of wealth, and still will be when fiat money is useful for tinder, and not much else.
