Yesterday I bought some coins from china that say szechuen Province 7mace and 2 candareens, and a kirin province of the same weight and a Silver dollar portraying Yuan Shikai.
All coins are larger coins, each weighing app 20 grams. I do believe them to be fake as the originals were supposed to be 26grams. I did read that on the fakes they used a slightly less pure silver and they were light, as mine are, 6 grams less.
My question is I was offered these at $2 a piece and cant find if there is enough silver in them to buy , if nothing else, for refining.
Various provinces and all, I am not familiar with chinese coins. They did say the chinese folks that come in buy them and said they were"chinese silver", and one guy the day before bout 170$ worth.

Most of those are not real silver. I bet if you slap a magnet to it, you might find it sticks! Not a good sign! :-)

Unless you are absolutely sure what they are and what is in them, I would recommend staying away.

wow at %2 silver that comes to .27 cents worth. The originals were .780 an ounce on the fatman dollar I bought. I did get 3 when I saw em, I like em tho. Don't have to make money on everything!
thanks guys
*edit, maybe when they said "Chinese silver" they meant it as we would say, American silver or Canadian silver. Wiki there says its used for jewelry, not coinage. |

Sad to say, but most anything from China seems to be a fake, unless you know a reputable dealer. I have some pandas, but they came from my usual guy. No worries there. If the coin(s) in question are that under weight, bad deal.

Chinese coins are for the whole country, not individual provinces. Also, the coins are not in English. To Scary for my taste, and I've been in China multiple times.

I would definitely stay away from them...too many fakes/scams out there involving anything from China.
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I was in Shanghai twice this year, & there were tons of vendors hawking silver coins. I didn't have the skill to determine fake from real, but I think the magnet test would be a good starting point. It was funny how hard the vendors tried to convince me they were silver, though. They would clash two coins together & hold them up to your ears so you could hear them ring. Every single one of them did it & I always got a kick out of it.

A lot of the fakes from China are silver plated.

I have some Pandas I bought a long time ago--but any more, I will only buy them slabbed by PCGS or NGC as an assurance that they are genuine.

After all that Lead in paint on toys from China I would be a little scared to purchase coins from there. Probably now coated with Lead. Where did they get all that Lead for toys anyway?
