OK I'm getting a basic Ryedale but I don't have a counter. I figure I'll use a scale. Which one do you guys recommend?

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

I would use just a regular generic scale that is acccurate to the tenth of a gram.

I mostly want to use in lieu of a sorter to measure $25 bags or to measure a box to know its not all zinc. Not sure from their descriptions on the net if the scales that can handle 20 lbs are also accurate to that degree. Is there a make and model anyone can recommend? I figure $20-30 for a scale is a better investment than a counter when just starting out.

You are going to be off by a few pennies (-3 to +3). One because like you said the big scales just can't weigh a penny difference and two because not a all pennies weigh the same. So you have to estimate the weight of the "average" copper penny when you do the calculation of how many pennies are in a pound.

The 50 pound postage scale that I use moves in 10 gram increments (a copper penny weights 3.1 grams). If you want more granualarity, I would move down to a smaller scale and weigh your pennies out in smaller batches and combine the batches to get to $25 or $50 lots.

Another way around the problem is to throw a few extra pennies in the bag. So the error is always on the high side and your buyers are never shorted....

Thanks, horgard.

I'm fine with spending an extra 3 cents a bag. Realistically I wouldn't need to weight out more than $25 very often. That's under 20 lbs. What scale would you recommend then?

I bought my scale several years ago. I doubt that they still sell that model, but it is a MYWEIGH and very similar to this one:

The specs say that it is accurate to 5 grams (plus or minus five grams, I am guessing, so 10 gram increments). Other people I believe have said that even the cheapest most generic scales work just fine. Scales these days tend to be quite good for the money...thanks China.

I would recommend you get a small postal scale as well. Mine can weigh from a single roll to a $5 cup of pennies and is perfect. I weighed out several $10 bags (2 $5 cups), and then sent them through my counter and I was at 1000 every time!

I weighed 10 $5 cups of zinc and put them in a bank bag and took them back to the bank before I got my counter.

I got a 72 pound postal scale off ebay. It was $9.99 plus some inflated shipping charge.. about $25 all in. It works great for checking box weights for duds. When set on the gram setting instead of pounds and ounces it weighs down to 5 grams. It has saved me tons of time with dud boxes.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

i forgot, I have a 150 lb pelouze shipping scale that I weigh boxes with. We do a lot of shipping and so this scale does double duty. You could get a lot of copper pennies for what this scale cost.

Yeah, we have some 150 pound and 300 pound Metler/Toledo scales like that.. and some bigger scales that are good for up to about 60 tons.. but those only go down to 20 pound increments.
