Copper wire if any. Copper pipes if any and you can get to them.
Old glass doorknobs (especially) or any old-timey doorknobs. Drawer and cabinet pulls if made of glass or otherwise look cool.
Of course, any old furniture you like if any is left in the house.
Old sinks if you like the look of them. Old toilets if you want them. Many old toilets had larger water tanks than are in use today (no need to double flush) if you know what I mean.
Get the old wood burning stove if there is one.
Take a brick or two from the fireplace for posterity. |
"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Depending on what kind of house you have and how old it is, see if there is a company like this in your area.
You must be logged in to see this link.
When the market was hot this company was traveling out of state for stuff. They don't usually pay much, but it is better than nothing, and they do all the work.
I have been in this store a few times. It is a museum, and worthy of a visit if you're in the area.

When they burn it down maybe they can let the local fire department use it as a training exercize. That way it is not all going up in smoke. |

| Or you could tear it apart plank by plank. If it is an old house, it might have some over-sized old fashioned beams in it that would cost a fortune to buy these or maybe it has real wood flooring that can be re-used. For the rest of the wood, hoard it and get yourself an outdoor furnace and heat your home for "free" the next winter or two. |

| A friend of mine was remodeling part of his house and discovered that the floor in the attic was made of full 1x 12 cherry planks. Also, somewhere in the midwest a company salvaged a barn and learned that it was 100% walnut. Some of these woods are worth real money. You cannot get old growth wood any more. |

Look at the gutters are they galvanized? Aluminum? Copper??
In college, I did roofing jobs during the summer. We made some good money on old gutters. One house had a valley in the roof. The valley was lined with a sheet of heavy guage copper 2 feet wide and 20 feet long. Can't remember what we got for it, Wish I had it today. |

| I don't know what condition the house is in but there is a big business of salvaging the guts of a home besides the obvious metal. If it has antiquish woodwork fixtures in good condition etc it could bring a mint in resale. |
