I haven't posted for a while because I've been staring at my Brandt coin wrapper. It came without a penny tube, so I've been wondering whether to modify the dime tube or try to whittle one from scratch. A dime is .705 in diameter, compared to .750 for a penny. The tube is .780, so it's a bit tight but it might work. The biggest problem is that rollers protrude through the tube to actually hold the coins -- the tube itself only guides the paper around the coins. So as I was staring at stuff I discovered that the bearing blocks could be turned over to move the rollers about .020 farther from center. All of a sudden it looks like my dime tube will actually work with pennies! The tube also has a metal bracket that sets the travel of the crimper. The nickel roll happens to be very nearly the same length as the penny roll, so I removed the bracket from the nickel tube and stuck it on. Now I am ready to clean the dust out of the machine, tighten belts, and stuff like that. Then I will turn it on, see if it works, and figure out why not.

Let us know how it turns out.

| I figured out that Royal Sovergn sells spare tubes for thier machines off thier website (or an affiliated website anyway). Good to know as I just bought a RS 4X each coin off ebay. Should be here soon. |

Hope it works Saul. That would be quite a feat.
Would it be possible to fashion some type of insert to slide into the nickel tube with the proper clearances for pennies? |

The rollers are set to hold the diameter of the coin stack, and the tube guides the paper around the stack. So I would have to machine new mounts for the roller bearing blocks, and then try to make an insert to fit between the rollers. At that point I might as well be making one from scratch. It wouldn't be hard to make one, it just takes some equipment that I don't have. |

| Well, I finally got some paper and tried it out. The tube is just too tight for pennies. I got one stack wrapped, but the scuffs on the paper plainly show how tight it is. So I still have a decision to make: do I make a new tube for pennies or do I ream the dime tube and some day have to make a new tube for dimes? |

| So far I have managed to sand the tube to .800" inside, which means I have removed .020" of plastic. I want you to know that is an AWFUL lot of sanding! I now have a tube that works, but not well. It wraps the coins but the roll doesn't slide out. So I have to sand out another .020" or more to get it reliable. That means 3 more days of sanding. |

| I'd call someone like these guys: You must be logged in to see this link. for the missing part. If modifying for dimes does not work you will not be able to do dimes or pennies. |

| Yes, that was a consideration. But I can sort dimes by readjusting the rollers to their diameter. Thanks for the link. I bookmarked it. |

What a chore! I finally got the tube sanded out to .820" and now it works. IT WORKS!
Unfortunately I got distracted and blew all my money on gold coins this week, so it'll be a while before I can start sorting pennies again. |
