Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

1. What years were they known to exist in the wild? The elusive Feathered Liberty was first discovered in 1859, and they were easily found in the wild up until 1909 when another very closely related specie with wheat plummage began to take over Feathered Liberty habitat. Finally, after 50 or 60 years, no more Feathered Liberties were known to exist in the wild. It is believed that loss of some key vitamin or mineral caused the Feathered Liberty to stop reproducing. In this regard, no Feathered Liberties, even those found in captivity, are known to have been born after 1909. Sadly, they have gone extinct in the wild. On the other hand, Feathered Liberties are extremely long lived, and there are vast numbers of Feathered Liberties in captivity to this day.
2. If I want to buy breeding stock in an attempt to get them to reproduce in captivity, how much will I have to pay? Feathered Liberties in good condition can be had for as little as one dollar due to their large number.
3. Are there any Feathered Liberties with especially attractive plummage? Yes. an 1888, with the last 8 printed over an earlier 7, is worth upwards of $27,500. Other especially attractive variations include those born in 1877 and 1909.
4. Has anyone found a Feathered Liberty in the wild within the last 30 or so years? Oh good Lord, don't believe in such dribble. You might as well believe in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy. There is a cult that frequents these parts which, as one of its core beliefs, believes that the Feathered Liberty still exists in the wild. They do weird chants and dances (wearing nothing but feathers) around campfires late at night and are feared to sometimes offer vast sacrificies of zinc, and sometimes the gullible, to their Feathered Liberty god. Be wary and watch out for this cult. This cult is led by a person who literally sits on several tons of copper as if it were a throne. It is believed by the scientific community that the members of the Feathered Liberty cult have been infected by some viral or bacterial pathogen which causes their delusional thinking. No cure has as of yet been found for a person once he/she begins to believe in wild Feathered Liberties. One of our members, Art Tatum, is feared to have been captured by the Feathered Liberty cult. He went to secretly observe the cult in one of their late night fire dances, but Art has not been seen nor heard from for several weeks. Art my be being subjected to unspeakable acts of brainwashing, fueled by consumption of vast quantities of alcohol, by the cult.
5. Does anyone have any DNA evidence of wild Feathered Liberties. No. There have been a number of people, all known members of the Feathered Liberty cult, who claim to have captured Feathered Liberties in the very recent past. DNA evidence has proved such "finds" to be from the known domestic strains of Feathered Liberty.
Have fun sorting pennies, and be sure to wash your hands after each sort. The pathogen that causes a belief in Feathered Liberties is believed to be transmitted by handling vast amounts of pennies. |

Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

The Ryedale can let you move a lot of pennies, but finding the wild feathered liberty means watching the zinc as carefully as possible.
My only find was in the zinc, and I don't know but it is possible that I have discarded one since I don't rigorously screen my zinc as some seem to do.
It's a trade-off between running as many pennies as possible and retaining as much rare coinage as possible, and I am more to the first than the second, at least until I get my first ton laid in!

I got a 1887/8 (trace of 7 under 8) several years ago. It was BU but ive handled it so many times it is now brown. Wish I had worn gloves. Found only one in hoarding recently. |
