Are small town banks better for increasing your odds of getting increased copper and/or wheats? Or do they all use Brinks eventually so it doesn't matter?

I am just wondering where the best odds are of finding wheat cents and old copper and if it is worth it to drive to a desolate small town.

I live in a small city or what many of you may consider a small town. Yes, we get Brinks here too but some of the small local independent banks seem to get a lot of their penny coinage from their customers. I think a small town that has a stable older population can provide some rare finds every so often. People tend to roll their coins and turn them in more in poorer towns.

I concur.
I've live in a neighborhood that is going down hill. At my bank, when I get CWR's they average about 40% copper. I drove out to some of the poorer neighborhoods and found the same thing, good solid CWR's yielding more than my 25% average.

Some of the older tellers at my small town banks are a little uncooperative. But I am getting better totals (about 5%) at the smaller banks.

At some point I'm going to start calling banks farther away than I normally get to during my drive buys. There's a number of them in small towns here in rural North Mississippi that are probably ripe for the picking. I'll just ask to speak to the head teller and then tell 'em I'm looking for a bank that has lot's of pennies that they want to get rid of and wouldn't mind selling to me.

I'm sure there are some out there that have several hundred's of dollars or more in the vault and they would like to sell them, at least when I've done drive buys I've run into this a few times.
So hopefully I can find a few without doing so much driving. I just need to make the time to do it.

This week though I took a chance on my main supply bank and ordered another 24 boxes. I sure hope all the new 2008's have been released by now!

I don't know about pennies but I have made some excellent scores on silver halves in those out-of-the-way small town banks.
Like Topeka says - the tellers seem to be quite seasoned and tougher to deal with. That's probably why they have old rolls piling up in the vault. It's easier to sell a few rolls to the vault than it is to buy and haul a load of boxes out of the vault - especially for a stranger. There are those times, however, when they are tickled to get rid of old inventory!

If this is correct, then the entire state of West Virginia should be the mother lode.

I did a drive by at a small town bank a while back. They had halves, I bought them and was very happy. A couple of weeks ago, I went there and learned that they had a free counter. I asked if I could buy the bags of pennies. They said no problem. They have an old lady getting rid of her fathers hoard. I have bought 6 bags so far. The one I did last night was 58% copper. I had another bag in the van and figured that I ought to drag it into the house before I left for work. As I did so, a 1943 steel peeked out at me. I opened the bag and fished it out. So far I have a dixie cup full of wheats including 40+ 1943 steel. These are just the ones that I have seen through the bag.

I called them this morning and asked if the woman is bringing in any other change. She has brought in nickles, dimes and qtrs. I bought every bag of coins that they had in the vault today. (They even sent one of the male tellers out with a cart to help load). The qtrs were a bust. The dimes I am not sure of yet, and the nickles don't appear to have any silver.

I figured that they would make me set up an account. They didn't. I even offered to, but they said it wasn't needed. I would do it to reward them, but the nearest branch is 2 hours from my house.

So, yes small town banks can be great places to get some nice coins.
