Is it possible to stamp only half of a penny leaving the othr side of the planchet flat?

I found a 1973 D that is flat on the reverse. It does not look like it was ever stamped.

Most likely somebody or something ground down one of the sides. For it to be a mint error is possible, but extremely unlikely. What you need to do is look at the flat side under magnification and see if there are any marks that will give you hint as to what happened to it (like fine maybe parallel lines that would indicate sanding).

If that does not clear things up for you, you need to take a good picture of it and post it on You must be logged in to see this link. Those guys know alot about error pennies.

Weigh it. If it weighs the correct weight, then it problably wasn't ground down.
3.11 grams for Pre 1982
2.5 grams for Post 1982

Thanks. I do not see any lines and cannot weigh it accurately enough to tell. I'll get a strong magnifying glass and better scale.
