Is it worth it to ask for Eisenhower dollars when going to the banks for other coins? I have gotten about 100 or so and haven't done anything with them.

Yes.. it is worth it. Don't ask for Ikes though.. just ask for Big Dollars. A buddy of mine got a few rolls of Morgan and Peace dollars that way. I alway ask for them. I sell the Ikes off for $122 per hundred.

I always ask for them. You never know....

I take a couple of them as samples to show the bank tellers. Always helps to have a visual "helper" for those who are always inclined to forget.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I asked my main "other than pennies" bank and the teller, who is really nice said "silver dollars??" I corrected "well....big dollar coins."
She repeated "Yeah those silver things, we only have what customers bring in" I looked at the vault manager and said "So you wouldn't be able to see if any large dollars were available from brinks?" she said "we can only get coins that are newer"
I just dropped it.

My banks never have any. Most of the young tellers don't even know what I am asking for. I have bought some from HoardCopper in the past. He is good, trustworthy dealer and easy to work with. Buy from him if you can't find any Ikes at your local bank and want some.

Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

When you are getting the Ike's are you looking for particular years or just collecting the Ike's or hoping to get some peace dollars?

All of the above! They also sell for a small premium as long as they are not beat up.

Hoard, Thanks for answering. I talked to the manager at my bank the other day and she said she can order me boxes of Ike's if I would like. I didn't do it because I figured all that was worth looking for was sliver Ike's and I figured they would be very hard to come by.

I found a few Ikes last week. I usually save them till I have about a thousand or so, and then sell them for a small profit---usually about $1.07 to $1.10 apiece. Some dealers aren't interested in Ikes, though.

The main reason I ask---and ask for the "Big Dollars"---is the hopes of finding a Peace of Morgan. Hasn't happened yet, but I know a few people who've got lucky!

My girlfriend really likes the Ike dollars, and she still asks for "Eisenhower dollars" instead of "Big Dollars." Anyway, last time we were out coin hunting, when she asked for them, the teller started going through the presidential golden dollars one by one, looking for Eisenhower. I couldn't help but chuckle a little. "Adams...Adams...Jefferson...Madison...Adams....Nope, no Eisenhower."

I've found one bank that usually has a few Ikes, and some rolls of Halves. I usually save up a few then buy some silver with them. So far I've only found one 1964 Kennedy in the wild. Keep hoping for a Peace or Morgan though.

Are you throwing that out?

greencopper.. the silvers are hard to find but their are some die varieties that are worth way more than silver and most folks don't know to look for.

TXTim.. Yep, I sell em on eBay and also direct. After paying eBay fees the net isn't much. but as MM says.. "more than I had before" So it helps fund the penny hoard a little.

Hoard, are the die varieties easier to find than the silver ones?

Yes, because not as many folks are looking for them and they are a lot harder to see. You still won't find very many of them though. A buddy of mine looks at a few hundred every month and only finds an occasional keeper.
