Stopped by the credit union today and picked up 3 bags ($150 face)of rolled pennies. I spotted a few of the solid red wrapped rolls. Sure enough they were 99+% copper. I love to see those old solid red rolls. Usually great percentages.

I guess the solid red wrappers are discontinued?

And on a completely different subject, I managed to score $200 in loose pennies today from a drive buy. The teller was happy to get rid of them and not have to put them through the rolling machine.

It's strange how some banks are more than happy to part with their excess pennies and others act like you are trying to rob them if you aren't a customer and ask for them.

Wow, I wrote about that 2 weeks ago. What is the red rolls about and why are they all coppers?

I have found that "crispy" rolls usually yield better results.

Yeah that is the type. 25 years ago the majority of wrappers were solid red. There are some new red wrappers but most new wrappers today just have stripes on them

I got some of those last night. They were almost all solid wheat cents.. mostly S mints, including the ones in the 20's and 30's. There were even 7 steel cents in them.. and 5 of those were S mints!

Hoard- You have been doing well lately with the 3 Indians the other day, and a bunch of steel cents as well! How many dollars do you sort a week?

Hoard, In regards to the solid rolls of "S" wheats, If you weren't a blood brother on the indian head thread, I would say that you suck.

However, since you are our honorary chief I have to say congrats, and nice score.

I have had a pretty good string of luck lately. I found my 4th Indian of the week last night. Remember, I am in S country.. so I should find more S mints. I haven't been sorting as much lately.. been kind of busy at the day job. Had to work Saturday.. and just got home from work about an hour ago. I have only sorted 12 boxes ($300) so far this week.. but maybe I can make a big push by Saturday. Unfortunately that 1908 Indian I found didn't have an S on it.

Heh, one of our local banks still gives those out... they must have ordered a metric buttload of them imprinted with their logo back in the 1980s. They look ancient, so i was real excited the first time i got a couple... Nothing special inside, tho :(

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

HCBTT I don't thinks it's luck anymore! If I sorted the way you did I would find a lot too! Your sorting maybe $250-$500 a night aren't you? That's why!

In dragracing we used to say "There's no substitute for cubic inches"

In penny sorting the saying should be "There's no substitute for sorting mass quantities"

Volume certainly improves your odds, but you still need some luck. I didn't find a single Indian in March or April.

A teller once gave me $17 in CWR. Each roll had the guy's name and bank account number on it. He obviously labeled them himself as banks often insist that you do that to deposit them. Not me!The copper pecentage had to be 50-60% easily overall with many wheats. One roll was 100% copper.

I love to see soild red CWR that are so old they actually faded from red to pink. On a bank on the 'seedy' part of town I found maybe 4 or 5 rolls that were like this. Had that musty old mold cabin smell to them. 99% copper with a couple 2006's wedged in

But I also found $20 soild 100% copper in those stripe new rolls they gave out at the bank. Its more or less not old rolls, but old people who have pennies. No offense to anyone!

Customer wrapped roll.

I love that smell on rolls of any denomination that sit in the dank corners of dusty old vaults! It gets my blood going!

Here's an even better indicator...

i'd never seen one of these before... a little fussy to roll, but neat as heck. And all copper, about 80% wheat!

I came across something similar in Canada a few days ago. You can use the same paper to roll all types of coins. Depending on the size of the coin, the denomination shows through a little window. Got them from a CIBC I think-remember seeing them as a kid at RBC. Nothing special in the rolls though. Perhaps these are still in use, or someone using old stock. Nothing prevents using and reusing old penny rollers - all my sorted ones go out in the same wrappers they came in. Except I mark every roll with the date range, so I am never going to resort my discards (and hopefully Steiner will not either).
