Sometimes we get in a hurry trying to process as many pennies as we can and are not quite as careful as we should be. I noticed a while back that sometimes there would be a single penny stuck in a Brinks wrap or paper wrap when I tossed it in the trash as I was furiously opening rolls trying to stay ahead of the Ryedale.
My solution for this to make sure it did not happen again was to switch to using white buckets to toss the empty coin wrappers in before putting them in the trash. If your coins come in Brinks wraps you can take a quick glance at the contents and any pennies you accidently tossed will show up as dark spots. If your coins come in paper rolls any pennies you try to toss will rattle down to the bottom of the bucket.

| Only a couple have happen to me but I started looking into them. I found one in every 5 to 7 rolls. So like nckt said I don't have that problem too! As a tip, stop racing your Ryedale. Thats like you trying to out run a corvette, not going to happen! |

I hand sort, and know that I have missed some pennies in paper wrappers. I know this because I fount them when I emptied the ashes from the wood stove (where I throw the paper wrappers).
I've thought about throwing the paper wrappers in a plastic bucket and running the metal detector over them. |

Any hamburger stand (pickle buckets), or the bakery section of a supermarket (frosting buckets). Painters, drywall hangers, and other construction types throw out lots of buckets, but they might be hard to clean. Home Depot sells 5 gallon buckets, but they are a bit flimsy.Smaller buckets by Rubbermaid are good, from your local Big Box store. |

The kitty litter buckets are really good. Surely you must know a cat owner.
The good news is most of the ones you threw away are zinc. But it is amazing how those things hide in the end of a roll sometimes. If you rattle the bucket they will all drop to the bottom.
And yes, I can actually crack rolls faster than the Ryedale can eat them. I actually get them out so fast that I can finish hand sifting my zinc by the time the box is done sorting. |

I obtained a large white plastic graduated cylinder that was being thrown away where I work.
When I unwrap I throw all the wrappers in there. A little shaking and all the loose pennies fall to the bottom.
When it's full I slowly dump the wrappers into a trash can and recover any pennies I might have lost.
Usually there are at least a couple, once I had as many as 10 in there. |

I get my buckets from Home Depot. They have white plastic 2 gallon pails that hold 2 bags or 10,000 coins very nicely and you can still lift them. They cost about $2.89 a piece. They also have lids if you want to away some coins for long term storage. |

| I am sure that I have thrown out many pennies because I have saved many from the trash. I try to be careful, but then I get tired and stop paying close enough attention. When I am on my game, for plastic wrappers I give them an extra looksie before I toss them and for paper wrappers, I crumple them up as I am tossing them so i can feel if there is a penny in there. |

| I have noticed this too. What I do is throw the wrapper in the air to see how fast the wrapper drops. I get most of them this way. It's like separating the wheat from the chaff. The plastic wrappers are better in this case because you can see through them. |

| I've actually thought of soaking rolls in water in a large vat - a baby pool? and then just wiping the paper away from the pennies - hah ... Anyone else had any other nutty ideas? |

| I had this problems too, to avoid it I take the roll wrappers and crush them in one hand and if I feel a penny I pull it out. |

I chew the wrappers until they take on the consistency of chewing tobacky, then, with a deft singular motion of the tongue, I place the wad of pulp between my cheek-n-gum and feel for any coppers
When there aint none, I deposit the wad of wrapper pulp into the spitoon, to be used later in sculpting a bust of some nondescript public servant........
If'n I finds a zincer, I spits it out on the ground and cusses it fer messin' with my dental acrutrements..

I once accidently dropped a penny in my trash with a paper wrapper. I heard a clink It is so much easier to spot them in the plastic wrappers. |

Not to change the subject but- Do you scrounge the trash bucket next to the coin counters at the bank? I always dig out a few dirty coins and stuff them in my pocket! |
