Gold was historically in the $20.65 price range, some years a little higher some a little lower. Amount of pure gold in a $20 gold piece .9677 ounces, the balance was copper. Melt value for a $20 gold piece back then, $20.65 gold X .9677 = $19.98 in gold.
The $20 coin was a double eagle. The $10 coin was an eagle. The eagle was made from 1795 to 1933. Not to be confused with the Gold American Eagle made from 1986 to present and containing 1 troy ounce of gold with a face value of $50.
