I found a penny today that is a little strange. It is a 1979 D. It is thinner than a dime, weighs 2 grams and it's diameter is a littler smaller than a penny and larger than a dime. Due to the smaller diameter, it has not rims.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

`Everybody is ignorant. Only on different subjects.' Will Rogers

"This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists' tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the "hidden" confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists' antagonism toward the gold standard." Alan Greenspan, 1966.

Look at the edges really closely with a magnifying glass to see if it has been trimmed. I have seen where they shave off the edges of a penny to try to get it to work as a dime in a parking meter or vending machine. They might have also treated it with acid.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

I'll try to post a pic later. As for the edge, it is sooth and completely round. If it was altered, than it had to have been done with a press of some kind. The features, are dull. All of the words are legible. If it was treated with acid woudld that make it thinner? Would it leave the design and words intact?

That's odd.

From what hes describing the damage seems to be post-mint, therefore has no additional value. I'll wait for the scans but its doubtful that such an error could be the result of a minting malfunction.

yeah, and that is why it would be worth so much more if it was a minting malfunction

I'm going to defer to Hoard. It does appear that it has been altered post mint. Whoever did it, did a nice job on the edges. The coin is centered nice and perfectly round.

It would never fool a modern vending machine with an electronic comparitor, but it might work on an old clockwork parking meter... never seen the inside of one of those.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

I have found several strange pennies too in the last few weeks. Some that look almost gold and one that looks like it missed the copper coating altogether.
