What is a fair payment to pay someone to sort pennies for copper cents? My younger brother, who is on social security disability, is going to be getting out of his behavioral rehab. unit soon and I thought I might offer him a contract of sorting pennies for me. I can take the risk of giving him a $25 dollar box of pennies at a time and he can sort them for the pre-82s. He would then re-roll the zincers and return them back into the bank and buy more to sort.

I thought of paying him a penny for each pre-82 cent he finds. I would pay him four cents for wheat cents. It's not the money that he will make that is the main thing here. I want keep him busy and give him a sense of pride in something.

I know you guys sort as a hobby and a labor of love, but does this plan of mine sound fair to you? Would you pay more than 100% over face for copper cents?

All opinions welcome

AL, you are helping your brother here, so, whatever you are paying him is fair

but it might take more than copper hoarding to start him off, you might also want to mention the 1955 doubling, and some other coin error possibilities, to make it more of a treasure hunt?

Good idea. I don't know about the 1955 doubling or other errors but if you or anyone else has a link I can go to please let me know.
