This auction is on Ebay. It is for 50 rolls of what are going to be common date wheats. They are up to $10.00 per roll. The seller tells a good story, he found them behind the furnace in the basement of a house he bought. And they are wrapped in some mysterious paper. I don't think the paper is all that mysterious. I know the better story you come up with on Ebay the higher your pennies sell for but this is ridiculous. Can any of you explain it?

I wish I could get $10.00 a roll for my common date wheats!!!

The person is a liar, they sell tons of coins and stuff and on all the different coins it says i just found this in a box behind the furnace in the basement. How much room is there behind the furnace in his basement?!?!?!?

I agree Bluegill I always get a kick out people selling "UNSEARCHED" bags but then you look at their feedback and they have sold dozens of better date wheats one at a time. Don't these people look at feedback before they bid. I guess I don't feel sorry for them.

If you think about it there really is no such thing as an "UNSEARCHED" wheat penny. If it has been pulled from circulation it has been searched. If you find an 09 S VDB or a 14D I don't think you are going to throw it in the bag with the rest of the common dates you found.

I think the only "UNSEARCHED" pennies there are, are the ones you pull out of circulation.

Wow that is exactly what I was wondering!!!

Here's what I think every time I see "unsearched". IF there is 1 $1000 coin in the lot, wouldnt you search the rolls instead of selling them?
Why would the person buy a lot of coins from an estate auction if they didnt know anything about coins?
Or
If they inherited them,
why wouldnt they pickup a red book or search the internet to find out what's valuable If they didnt know anything about coins.

I agree with everyone else who has posted that there's no such thing as "unsearched" wheats. Granted, one person might sort for one thing (steels and key dates, for instance) and the next guy might sort for another (error coins), but *everything* gets sorted to some extent.

Simply the fact that the wheats are separated from the post-58s means that the coins have been searched. Unless the coins are from the pocket change bucket of a 150-year old man who stopped adding to it in 1958.

Auctions like this remind me of those postings on Craigslist that offer a $10 roll of "valuable" bicentennial quarters for $25.

My thoughts exactly Moboman, with the slight possibility that there might be a valuable coin in a bag I know that no one out there is going to pass that bag along without looking through it. That's just human nature, curiosity is going to get to everyone.

I also get a kick out of everyone saying the bag is unsearched by "me". That doesn't mean it wasn't searched by one of their kids or wife. But I suppose technically they are not lying if they did not search the bag. But if you are going to sell a bag on Ebay it is pretty much standard practice to put "UNSEARCHED" in you title and description. And the more outrageous story your come up with the higher your bag will sell for. I guess as long as people keep falling for it there will always be unsearched bags on Ebay.

the rolls look as if they were cut open to look through them. He might have found them in his recently purchesed estate behind the furnase in a pot, but i'm pretty sure he searched them.

"I dont know anything about coins so it wouldnt do me any good to look through them."

They never said they didn't look through them. They just said it wouldn't do them any good. Well I guess that is playing with words, but I don't think they claimed they were unsearched.

When we moved into our house I found a whole bundle of thin solid zinc rods by the furnance. Maybe I'll sell them on ebay.

I thought about finding some wheats behind my furnace. I figure I could say it wouldn't do me any good to search them. (which is true bc I would know there wasn't a key coin in there :)

These must be a hoard from a person collecting coppers before the Mint stated making Aluminum Cents in 1973. He then died and we have the fruits of his labor. Or some other laod of . . .
