How much silver is there in silver plated items?

For example, I got a (presumably) silver plated serving dish - 15 inch diameter and weighing I don't know a pound or so. How much silver is in this?

Are these things worth saving and/or can they be scraped?

I saw it at a thrift store for a few dollar and it is obviously silver on the outside so I picked it up.

You can use it at home. Or you can throw it at a rabbit.

Its not really my style. I knew there was a problem when I went on EBay and saw these things selling for like three dollars a piece. Its amazing what some people will write on EBay. There was one silver dish, a 3 lb dish for auction for $20 where the seller wrote that they "weren't sure" if it was sterling silver or not. Three lbs of sterling silver is worth like 700 dollars. I think they know what it is.

Some silver plated stuff is plated over copper or brass and is worth copper or brass scrap price ($1.50 to $3.00 per pound). Other stuff you might as well throw at a rabbit unless you have the skills to refine silver.

I'd like to see the person with the skills to hit the rabbit....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

A plate would be tricky. A rock, no problem.

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed.
