sore?

Anyone had to stop because you are making the same motion over and over?

It's like my thumb goes numb like carpal tunnel or something. It kind of annoys me and scares me at the same time.

When I sort by eye I have to take off my glasses and look reeeaalll close 'cause I'm (more than) a bit nearsighted.

So I would sort sitting down, pennies on the table, and hunched over to see them.

Made my back and neck stiff.

Take a 5 minute break every 15 minutes or so to keep the repetitive motion syndrome at bay.

Yes, same experience here. Also typing all day at work. Take a solid five minute break at least once at hour - preferably more often.

I too was starting to get carpal tunnel like soreness. I now sort on a table and never pick the penny up.

I have a big handfull on the table all face up, then use a magnifing glass and as a scan over the dates I slide the penny into a pile to either side of me. Zn to the left, Cu to the right.

The magnifiying glass keeps me from having to bend over too far, which saves the back from cramping up on me.

I can do that for several hours and it's actually kind of stress relieving...

I've had many a hand cramps from sorting---nothing chronic, thank goodness.

I don't sort by hand I run them through my handy dandy Ryedale. So I don't have a problem with my fingers, but I am developing a back problem. My wife won't allow me to have any of my copper mining equipment upstairs because it makes too much noise. So I have to do all my copper sorting in the basement. I have to carry all the bags I get down the steps to the basement, just today I got 10 bags or $500.00 face value. Thats 5 trips up and down the steps with a 30 plus pound bag in each hand. Then after I get the copper mined out I have to carry the zincers back up the steps to dump at the bank. This is kind of getting to be like work. But I enjoy it. I think it is relaxing to be down there "PLAYING WITH MY PENNIES" as my wife puts it. If 10 to 15 years from now when we are getting 5 to 10 times face value for our copper I will look back on it and say it was all worth it.

Just think of what you are saving on gym membership fees NDFARMER! Any way you can install a dumb waiter or some kind of chute system to send the pennies downstairs?

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Yes Hoard I have been trying to come up with a way to get those bags in the basement. I have been looking at conveyors or a slide, but the slide would only work for getting them downstairs. What I really need is a two way conveyor so I could use it to get the bags downstairs and get the bags of zincers back up again. But like you say it is good exercise. I guess if it gets to the point where I can't handle a full bag in each hand I will have to open them up and put half a bag in two pails so that would cut the load in half, but I would have to make twice as many trips. I guess that just means more exercise. If I keep it up I should be in good shape anyway. Just one more benefit to sorting copper.

NUMBNESS is no fun. 1000's of little needles poking you in the elbows, hands or fingers can be a distraction. I find that I have to relocate or change positions for relief. When it gets too bad it's break time.
Some of us on here might not mind a back ache if the problem was caused by too many pennies. NDFarmer splitting the bags and lightening them a little might help and the few extra trips up and down may make you live longer. To your health.

I spent my April vacation recovering from major back surgery that was the direct result of repetitive motion (deadlifts/squats). If I could go back in time, I’d switch things up all the time. Summer would be for Karate, fall for Jiu-Jitsu, winter for weight lifting, and spring for jogging/bicycling. Even the training for the activities themselves should be switched frequently(high reps, low reps, changes in intensity levels, biometrics, core strength work, STRETCHING, etc.). It all seems so obvious now. Be very careful, and follow the sound advice you have received. Live well!

A sort at my computer table and rarely get any sort of pain or cramping. Then again, I do have 20/20 vision so its not necessary for me to get close to the coins. I don't think you'll ever see me complaining about too many coins either.

NDFARMER.. That is why I suggested the dumb waiter. You could rig it on a pully system. I suppose the wife wouldn't let you install a winch at the top of the stairs to pull tubs of pnnies up, right? I used to lug 2 bags in each hand but started to worry I might get shorter by compressing my spine so I started doing smaller loads.

No my wife won't let me install anything like that. She thinks I'm nuts anyway. She is just totally against my coin collecting of any type. She goes nuts every time a bag of wheats shows up in the mail, or I bring more bags home from the bank.I thought the day my Glory W-S10 coin wrapping machine showed up we were headed for a divorce. I could be doing worse things than collecting coins, I could be out drinking, smoking, and gambling. I don't do any of those. Rather than going to the bar and spending $50.00 buying a round for my friends I would rather buy a couple of Morgan dollars or a bag of pennies. I sure hope that sometime down the road I will be able to get $500.00 for the $50.00 bags I am putting away now, it will sure be nice to be able to say I told you so.
