RATS!!
17 out of 20 boxes PURE ZINC!!
At least all the pennies showing through the holes were super shiny and I'm didn't even bother opening or weighing them.
You can sort of tell by the heft of the box if it weighs light anyway.
1 box with maybe 3-4 old pennies showing
2 have a mix of old and new showing and feel a bit heavier.
So I took all 17 USELESS ZINC boxes straight to my dump bank, $425 of possible sorting WASTED!
I'm angry enough to spit!
(wipes off monitor)
Well, I've still got older boxes I haven't gotten to yet, and I can't sort until I fix my Ryedale anyway, which won't be until tomorrow at the earliest.
Now I have to do more drive-buys, and those take way too much time.
It's so much simpler when I can just order as many boxes as I want from one bank.
UNLESS THEY ARE ALL ZINC!
RATS AGAIN!

| Ouch...I am in the process of hand sorting my 2nd box for this week and it seems like the copper yield is alot lower than usual...around 20%. I am really disappointed but cant imagine what it must feel like to get box after box of duds. |

The only "good" thing is that I'm getting all new zincs.
Thus it has to be because the US Mint is sending out new pennies, and I don't think they do this all the time.
Getting pure mixed zincs would actually worry me, since it would mean I was getting someone else's dumps.
RATS AGAIN!
edit: oh, and 20% copper is pretty typical for me.
All you folks getting 30% plus are lucky ;) |

| Just be sure that they are not a bunch of shiny wheat cents in there. Weigh them, it only takes a minute. |

20% is a good yield. There are folks on this board that would kill for that percentage.. LOL.
Sorry hear about your misfortune William. Zinc Happens! Looks like you need to get a good scale.
One way to improve your odds is to have multiple source banks. That way when one is shoveling out the shiny stuff you can get good pennies from the others. Also good to have a small stack in reserve for times when this happens.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I'm down to 24 boxes in reserve, the reason I like buying lot's of boxes at once is to keep a reserve.
The last 3 weeks I've done close to $1,500 in drive buys, but that takes much longer than a single big purchase.
Plus, I have to take off from work early to do these, and from my limited experience the best time to ask tellers for pennies is during their non-peak times, so during lunch or on Friday afternoon's aren't good.
While I am lucky in that I can take off once in a while, I can't do it on a regular basis, and to get to a really good concentration of banks is over an hour from where I work.
Well, I'll hit up the banks around where I work next week, try to get $500 or so to tide me over. |

William, I have only gotten one shiney box so far. I have had banks tell me that brinks couldnt fill my order though..
I try to keep about 25 boxes in reserve. MY reserve is for when I dont do drive byes. This week I only did one and it yielded $50. Hopefully I'll be able to do a couple tomorrow. |

The shiny boxes aren't all bad, usually you can get over $60 for a sealed box of uncirculated zincs on ebay. That is if you have the time to list them and the ability to freeze your capital for a few days.
Mixed zincs, on the other hand, would be incredibly annoying. I guess I'm lucky I haven't run into that problem as of yet. |

Well there is a copper lining on my cloud of zinc despair.
I just finished $240 in drive buys and at the very last bank I stopped at, one which has had friendly tellers for me, what do I get but $80 in 30-year old customer wrapped pennies!
One of the tellers recognized me when I came in and told me that, a couple of days after my last visit, another customer had dropped off $140 of pennies that he had rolled as a boy back in the early 80's.
The pennies had been at his parents house ever since and for some reason the customer had finally gotten them and deposited them.
The teller actually said he had wanted to contact me but didn't have my name or number (he has them now) and unfortunately the bank had used $60 worth of the pennies in the last couple of weeks.
But he still had $80 left, and even though I had to go get an extra $40 in cash from one of my two account banks, I got them all.
Tonight I plan on seeing lot's of copper, yippee! |

Things are back to normal at my main supply bank.
I picked up my order of 24 boxes and they were all mixed this time.
Of course none of the boxes weighs more than 15.2 lbs, most weigh 14.8 to 15.0.
But at least I have something to work on for a while.
Now let's see if I can get $200 sorted tonight... |
