How do you stamp these? What tools are used? |

There are two dies. I used 1" shanks on those, engraved the lettering, and then necked them down. They're affixed by machined die-holders to the ram and bridgeplate of a small screw press (something on the order of the common Adams #2) and you need to make a little positioning guide out of wood and/or foam rubber to help align the nickels just right so the counterstamp falls right where you want it. The slowest part of the whole operation is looking at each of the nickels and getting them positioned and turned the right way. Striking just takes a couple seconds but sloppy positioning is very noticeable. For some reason the struck nickel usually sticks on the top die, so you have to flick it off before positioning the next one. Once everything is set up good and you are into the "swing" of it you can do a roll's worth in about ten minutes. We print special roll papers too.
NO FAIR HOARDING THESE! At least three quarter of them need to get into circulation. |

BTW, I found "B.O. is the devil" written on 3 pennies in a row from a new 2010 roll. Nothing like free speech! |

Congratulations! Where was it found if you don't mind my asking?
By the way... this is NOT considered defacing currency, this is the creation of a "coin novelty" in the same class as rolling a penny at the zoo. The law is clear that what is illegal is defacement "with intent to defraud"... that is... to create a counterfeit rarity or make a coin appear to be worth more than it is. (gold plating liberty head nickels was a popular scheme... made them look like $5 gold pieces) |

I got some of these from Tom, they are so cool! I have put out 20 so far into circulation. I have followed his lead and have been stamping lots of nickel clad half dollars that I have sorted with "NO WAR" the "O" is a peace sign. I have also done a few "9-11 = inside job" on 2001 halves but that takes more than twice the effort as I am doing the digits individually with a hammer. If anyone wants one let me know! |
