Ok, what's your favorite thing to find for scrapping purposes? My favorite is Air Conditioners that have been drained of coolant. Even a small room AC will scrap out for about $20 with minimal work. Next would be large electric motors, such as well pump motors, or electric compressor motors. Nice copper windings!

I like platinum crucibles, but I actually haven't found any yet.
Air conditioners and aluminum cans make me happy, too. Cans are easy---don't even have to think about them. Air conditioners require effort, but it's nice to have one to tinker apart on a slow, rainy day. |

The line sets, (copper tubing connecting your outdoor coil to your indoor coil), is my favourite. #1 copper. If I could get the platinum crucibles as easily as the copper scrap, including the indoor and outdoor coils, they would be my favourite too! I have found that A/C's require very little effort. 1/4" and 5/16" chuck, or nut driver, for your cordless drill, wire cutters, and a reciprocating saw. Done.

| It's hard to pick a favorite. Basicially for me, anything that I find that requires minimal work is my favorite. For instance, I found a radiator yesterday, with everything removed that needed to be removed. Why on earth would they throw this on the side of the road? Who knows. I also found a small engine, mostly cast aluminum. I got paid 31 bucks for it, no work involved other than putting it in the truck. I've never recycled an A/C though. |

I'm in the HVAC/R industry so I have regular access to nice amounts of scrap associated with the industry.

My mother in law does the bidding for a large electrical contractor. He lets me have all his scrap. My record for one day is almost 600 lbs. It was the really big stuff, 500 MCM, something like that? It only took me about 4 hours to strip it. I made almost 1600 bucks for that. Lately though it's been the romex stuff, about 50-60 pounds a week the last few weeks. I get a bunch of aluminum wire from them also.

| I hear ya on the engine. I've taken in a few boat motors that did pretty well. I took one completey apart down to the block, pistons and everything. I got more money but it sure was alot of work. I've been thinking I'd like a hoist on my truck. I had to pass by a car motor once because I could not get the thing in the truck by myself. Needless to say when I came back it was gone. |

| I was thinking the same thing about a hoist. I know that motor is still there though, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. |

My favorite item to scrap are computers. I think it's because that is the only thing I really know how to scrap at the moment.
In one computer I can get a steel case, some aluminum heat sinks, a CPU processor, several circuit boards, a few magnets, aluminum casings, and of course wires.
Currently I am expanding my horizons to computer peripherals. Printers are really easy to get a hold of, and usually the donator forgets to take out the ink cartridge which holds some value as well.
Haven't gotten to try to scrap much else. I have my eye on some old office furniture that has some really heavy steel bases on them.
Great forum...I am learning tons!
Happy scrapping! Tom |
