Here's an example of how I store my pennies. Every 50 is wrapped (for easy counting), then $8 worth face value is put in to a 1 quart ziploc, folding in half and taped. It makes a nice, steady brick that's sealed from moisture, easily accounted for and ready to be put in to an ammo can, bank box or whatever.

P.S.-Keep in mind I didn't start too long ago! Only $66-$68 worth so far. Some single rolls are left out of the picture.

Good idea. I wonder if we could shrink wrap them?

I wouldn't see why not. They can withstand the heat it would take. I went the ziploc/electrical tape route since it's cheap, but if you went the other way it should work!

My big thing is bricks. It's like I'm packaging cocaine or something. HA! The next step is to weigh each one and mark them. But it's easier for caching, storage, transporting and whatever else you need. Also way more uniform.

Right now, I'm storing most of my nickels in a bag with some old silver dollars. A really, really big bag ;)

I store all of my copper in the Brinks boxes from the bank. They are nicely marked on all sides "$25 Pennies" and store 50 rolls of 50 coins; 10 rolls per row, 5 rows high. It makes a nice tight brick that is free, and stacks easily. For reinforcement I tape the corners of the boxes and I also mark the upper right corner of each box "Cu" so that I know it is Copper and not zinc, wheats, etc. If I can remember, I can post a photo.

i put pennies and nickels into whatever containers i can find: cookie cans, 2-L soda pop plastic bottles(can hold 22 pounds($110 face)), 7-eleven slurpee cups, 500 ml mineral water plastic bottles(can hold 5 pounds($25 face))...quite messy right now; so i need a balance to figure out how much i have each time i need a count

Common - You just bought the boxes alone? Didn't know you could do that...I might give that a try.

I ordered mine from Amazon, but there are a lot of places that carry them. I don't think you can get less than 50, though. You must be logged in to see this link.

If you buy coins by the box from the bank, you get the box for free. Just return the zincs without a box. I've kept all my nickel boxes, and will someday transfer my bag nickels into the boxes.

I just put mine in containers. No need to keep them in the rolls if they will be eventually melted at a scrap yard for the copper content.

I didn't get a box, it was 50 loose rolls. I thought if you got $25.00 they automatically gave you them in a box, but the teller walked around the counter and handed me a plastic bag with 50 rolls. This was why I ordered the boxes.

i guess it's up to the bank. I've only had one instance of them not having a box to give me 50 rolls of nickels in.

Out of all the times I've gotten pennies, I've only gotten them in a box once. I either break the bank on pennies and have to go to two or they've already trashed them. lol

I just store my rolls of pennies and nickels in an ammo can.

I dont have too much yet. Only one can so far but its about 2/3s full and quite heavy.

I like your packing though. I'll have to give that a try.

Wow Hooli,

Those packaged pennies look like contraband or improvised munitions. Dunno if I'd want to get puled over with some of those in my trunk when Officer Friendly wants to take a look... Sure are eye-catching, tho.

Ballcopper, I store pennies in 2 liter bottles, too & get about 22 lbs. My calculations come up with $32.xx per bottle. Unsure where you get the $110. Would be nice, tho.

Thought this site was interesting:

Individual boxes are $1.70, can mix and match. Plus they have canvas bags for cheap. $25 minimum total order.

I keep mine in the large size maxwell house coffee cans. I also try to keep it about 25 pounds easy to judge how much I have after that I throw in some desiccants and then seal it with the plastic lid and vinyl electrical tape and label it with info such as Cu linc 59-81 25lbs and date it gets sealed or Ni Jeff 38-td 25lbs and date sealed. I have been tossing around the idea of cutting the bottoms of other cans and sealing them with soddering iron.

D'oh! I didn't think that thru... The 2-L bottles sure are handy tho, eh? Portable, tough, uniform...

Still hard to believe I can walk into a bank with $100 paper, and trade it for a box of nickles worth what? $40 over face? What a world.

That's why you see me in the banks so often.

Yeah Beercritic, the idea actually came from seeing a kilo of weed. I like that though because it keeps the weight down on the packages, and if I need to rip one open, I know exactly how much I'm giving out without really thinking about it.

Officer Friendly will have more to think about if I get pulled over being that I usually have 1 or 2 guns in the car. Sure I have a permit, but they'll grab his attention should he search it. Then again, if he did want to search my vehicle, he'd need a warrant first. If he wants in, he needs to earn the priv of searching my car. HA HA HA!

Five gallon water jugs are a great way to store any type of change. If you get about five or six it makes it really easy to seperate zinc, copper, CuNi, nickel, etc. The only downside is once they are full they will weigh over a hundred lbs. and not be able to be moved safely. But it is ideal for a basement or somewhere hidden out of the way intended for storage for a long period of time.
