I have for the first time recently, and a chap named (name edited out by Ardent Listener on 4/8/08) cashed my money order and never produced the coins. He is about to begin by getting prosecuted. Anyone have similar experiences.

This incident happens a week after a young family asked if they could borrow my $10 pair of jumper cables, then they drive away with them.

Losing faith in my fellow man.

you should examine the ambiguity of your post!
maybe you should write: "has anyone ever purchased anything from anyone or anywhere outside of e-bay?"
NO! none of us have ever bought anything anywhere else!

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences 123montanaro. Sadly life is full of such slobs.

Thanks for telling us about this rice character, if he will pull this stunt on you he would pull it on Craigs list or ebay.

123- unless your money order was for thousands of dollars you will not receive a penny of it back. its not worth the district attorney or postal inspectors time for petty cash amounts. Not saying you shouldn't try but don't expect much given the myriads of people who get ripped off for larger amounts of money with no reconciliation. It just costs too much to resolve it and petty thieves know this.

Wow, I've dealt outside of ebay many times with people. I have never had a bad experience.

The only time I've gotten ripped off like this was when I bought a rebuilt carb for my honda n600. I sent the core in and never got my $100 core fee back.

His name is Bruce Whittig if you ever see him on ebay it is, 1enginebuilder. Try to avoid this guy, he made up some family problems at first and now he wont respond to emails. He still is selling stuff on ebay though.

I do alot of deals on ebay and would never screw someone over. One just because I'm an honest person and two it is great to get around those fees and help both parties save money. If I ever send someone a message on ebay for something to buy,I ALWAYS give them my # so they can talk to me and feel comfortable in the deal

This is why I'm not in a huge hurry to sell copper on Ebay.

I know most transactions go well, but I'm a bit paranoid.

Hopefully you will get restitution 123montaro.

I have bought several items from members of this forum outside of ebay. I have had nothing but good experiences from our little group of hoarders.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite (re: the defective time machine), "I wrote a letter to eBay demanding my money back in full!" My kid even gets that one! LOL! Don't bother. Sorry, but you'll never see a penny. Every eBay purchase is a gamble (look for lots o' positive feedback).

Why would you ever send a money order to someone you didn't even know, especially outside of eBay?

I have dealt with people on here, and other non-eBay related transactions. So far so good.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. I'm eventually thinking to advertise some copper on Craigslist, with the intention of being able to directly exchange the copper for cash. Anywhere within a 60 mile radius or so I would consider delivering the copper as long as I get 2x face value for it.

Of course there are risks associated with this as well, but if I ever do this I'll make sure and meet the buyer at a really secure place to do the transaction.

Like the parking lot of a local police station :)

I recently bought a 100 ounce silver bar from Craigslist. The seller offered a very good price and he delivered to to my place of business which was about 50 miles away from him. No problems and I would use Craigslist again.

I've dealt on E-bay, craigslist and several forum sites over the years. Mostly good results, but a few losses.

Are you throwing that out?

restitution now that is a joke.

I had the wheels and tires stolen off my honda civic in early 2007. The police recovered the property as they hadn't sold it by the time they got caught. There was damage done to the car when they took the tires and wheels.

I asked the court to give me restitution for my insurance deductible and the time I spend with the whole mess. The guys attorney ripped into me on the stand because I sold the car unfixed. Saying I really didn't lose anything since I didn't pay any money to fix it. Then the judge didn't like the fact the insurance was in my mother's name (I titled the car in mine and her name to save on insurance cost). They also didn't think my time was worth anything since I was salary. They said I didn't actual lose any wages.

They did award me the insurance deductible (even though it was questionable if I was the owner of the car), but the D.A. in open court asked the judge, "is that it?" (in a tone that voiced my thoughts that the judge was a liberal POS, too)

If you steal without making contact with the victim, then you don't get anything for it. I haven't received a dime in restitution. The guy had a huge list of charges that he plead to and didn't get one day in jail. He wasn't even following the judge's ordered punishment. D.A. said nothing would happen to him for that either.

They can just steal with no worry. I have decided that the legal system is a huge waste of money. All that money spend on police, courts, and jails is a huge waste of taxpayer money.

My only experience was the opposite. Last Christmas I sent a money order for $400 to a guy on another forum for 28 ounces of silver at $14/oz. He never got it. Have you ever known anybody whose letter actually got lost in the mail? Me neither. But that's what happened. I got a refund from the post office, but it took over two months and by that time silver had already jumped over $18. So I spent the $400 on a Ryedale.

I almost forgot, my best expierence ever. It was on a forum for my van (chev astro). I bought a set of street scene mirrors, and some clear corner lights. (he gave up on his project and had lots of new aftermarket accessories for the van laying around.) Well I told him I would buy them. He said he only accepted money orders and that I could wait to send one until after I got my stuff. It was only a hundred bucks, but the manor he did business blew me away. Someone over 2000 miles away from me is sending me stuff that I havent paid for yet! I sent him his money order the day after I got the parts. I'd love to do business with someone like this again.
