PennyPauper.. Very good questions. First.. according to the Treasury Department, there is a difference between a purchase and a debt. When you buy something at the store.. they don't give it to you until you pay for it.. so there is never a debt. Unless of course, you put it on the store credit card. Then you have a debt. You make your payment on the card directly at the store. I pay bills at the store with whatever coin I happen to have rolled all the time. I have even payed my mortgage with pennies! I asked at my utility company about paying them in pennies. They said "Sure!" They did have 2 restrictions.. both to discourage the payment by pennies and to ease the flow of business. First.. the pennies must be rolled. (makes counting a lot easier) Not a problem for a guy with 3 automatic rolling machines. Next.. each roll must have your utility account # on it. Again, not a problem.. just print up several pages of labels and stick them on the rolls. Heck, I even have an automatic label peeler for mass mailings that advances the labels and peels them half off as soon as each row is complete.
I would like to see more stories about members paying with zinc. Zinc disposal is a problem we all face and the more we spend.. the less we have to get the banks to accept. No reason we can't have a little fun with it. |

I told my wife about these threads, and she just laaaaughed and laughed. She runs a register at Wal-Mart so I asked her a few questions.
Q: If someone wanted to pay for something that is over a dollar with three rolls of cents, what would you do? A: I would ask a manager whether it was okay, and do whatever they said. If they said no, I would remind them that they are legal tender. (Really!!!)
Q: Assuming the first transaction was OK, if someone wanted to pay for a purchase of around $23 with a brick of pennies, would you accept them? A: Yes. Is it a sealed bank box? Then no question. Yes.
Q: What would you do at the end of your shift when the manager saw the brick and said WHAT THE HECK? A: I would just say "It's all money, and I figured with 50 registers we could use it. Now you don't have to buy them for a while."
Q: Is there a limit on how much you would accept? A: Well, no... I guess. If it was rolled, I would check one roll and make sure it was legit, and take what they had.
Q: What would you do, on a large purchase, if the manager said you had to count them all? A: I would say OK, turn off my register light, put out my NEXT LANE PLEASE sign, politely tell the other customers in line they could wait for me or they could go to the next lane... and start counting. Then she said something that made ME laugh. "Wait... If I noticed the first roll was all zincs, then I would count them. If there was copper, I would probably just reroll the first roll, buy them all and bring them home to you." She loves me. She might not love this hoarding stuff, but SHE REALLY LOVES ME! |

Uh-oh, we might have a new category: Most zincs spent, Wal-Mart. Keep in mind, I have a wife of above average intelligence. (I married up). So she would do this, but another would probably blow a gasket from confusion. I left this part of the conversation out... She told me they are trained not to give different combinations of change to the customers, only what is the most expedient means. For instance, if your change is 17 cents, she's not SUPPOSED to be able to give you 17 "pennies" unless necessary (eg not having any dimes or nickels). So if someone asks for their $20 change as a ten and two fives, she's "not allowed" - those were her words. She said she would probably do it anyway, because she's not stupid. But it's because of quick-change artists. "Can I get my twenty back as a five and two tens?" |

| Interesting stuff here. I once purchased a drink at a corner store and payed the extra 36 cents with a roll of pennies, and the manager took it without question. As for Wal-Mart, I think the cashiers around Austin are a little too dumb to know what to do like your wife does, uthminista. As you know from the "9 Pennies for a Dime" thread, some cashiers in my area are so dumb and confused. |

The younger generation has a hard time with anything out of the ordinary. They rely on the register too much to tell them what to do. If I had rolling machines I would dump some of my zincs in rolls.
I am curious to hear if anyone has been able to use large amounts of rolls at Wal-Mart. |

Several years ago, I went in to protest a fine for overnight parking in front of my father's house by paying with $15.00 in pennies. I let them know that thought this was not justified, because I pulled my truck into the driveway at 2:30 AM, and that I did not consider it overnight. They agreed with me, and dismissed it. |

That's Crazy WolvesDad,
Before i had a credit card i would occasionally use a halve roll or two to pay for gas. But all in pennies is a bold move indeed. I agree with HCBTT, if you don't have to go back there any time soon it may just work out in your favor.
I did buy groceries in coins frequently when i would go shopping where they had automated lines. Just filled up the poor machines with nickels, dimes and quarters to the tune of $150-200. |

Guys keep a sane head. One of the things that lets us continue is to stay below the radar.
Keep a level head and let the sheeple go on not knowing why you have so many cents. It only takes one ACCUSATION of being a terrorist to make a lot of waves. Remember people talking about hard money or fear of inflation is one reason to be considered a terrorist.
Legal or not, right or not, is not the question.

OK.. today I just happened to have a spare box of zinc in the trunk... hey, it could happen! So for old times sake I just had to buy some gas with a brick of pennies. Just non-chalantly slide a box of pennies up on the counter and say "$25 worth on #3." The clerk's reaction was "Oh, Jesus!" then she very quickly counted the rolls to make sure it was a full box and thanked me for my purchase."
How many of the rest of you are members of the 1 brick club? |

HCBTT, thats awsome. I really would love to do sometime. I have paid in halves for gas a few times and they just look at them and toss them in the bottom of their drawer.
Once in college at the $.99 movie theater there was a very rude ticket lady. I decided to count out my 99 cents and go watch a movie with some friends. Well as soon as I started dumping them on the counter, she pulls a cent out of her till and hands me two rolls. She tells me "roll em". I stood there for a good 5 mintues rolling my cents while my friends stood inside howling at me. |

You don't have to have a big automatic rolling machine to join this club. You can hand roll and still spend a box or 2 for gas. Deal is a member of the exclusive 2 Brick club and he does not have a rolling machines. |

| I once paid for 2 pizzas with a box of pennies. The delivery man asked if the rolls were all in there. I said "Yes, keep the change for tip." No problem at all! Though I'm not gonna push it. |
