I don't know of any way to make new private message more noticeable. I'll check to see if there is a way, but I'm afraid we're probably limited to what forumco offers.
I can only suggest the obvious---which is also what I do. Whenever I log in, I look to see if "Private Messages" is in bold and has a number next to it. (This happens when you get new PM's.)
Notification that new PM's have arrived doesn't stand out as much as on other forums, but as yet, I'm afraid that's the best our humble forum can do. I'll double check, anyway.
