I found a 1982 Zinc penny with a "Z" above the date on the front. This came from a the worst box yet (something like 12-13%).

Why do people mark coins? What if someone is trying to fill a book and needs that date? You know that there are some kids that don't get to go through 10,000 pennies a week. Now the one 1985d that they found has some mark through it.

If you marking coins, then you are more likely to get it back. No one has any reason to pull it out of the system for a book or collection.

Also, are you sure it wasn't an error coin? You might have marked a $500 1992d closed AM or 1999 wide AM coin. How about the 1983 Double die or the 1984 double ear? All zinc pennies are not worth just a penny.

Please stop marking coins!!

I agree with SWUSC, but sadly pennies aren't even worth one cent to some people. There are probably more people that simply throw their cents away than there are people who mark them. Luckily for us, most people just keep em moving, never knowing the value of what they are holding. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss...

I found 3 or 4 Kennedy Halves that were counterstamped with some numbers. I don't remember what they were at the moment.

Are you throwing that out?

Found Another 1982 Zinc with a 'z' in black marker above the date. This one too came from a poor percent box of pennies (9.75%).

And then I found a 1987 penny with a '22' on the back in thin blue marker on the linclon memorial.

I got a box of hand rolls this week that were marked with xxxxx in black ink on each of the rolls. The only coppers in them were a couple of copper 82's per roll. It was a very sad box for a hand rolled box, but it proves there are some minor hand-sorting going on in the Indianapolis area. Anybody want to fess up?

In my last box, I found 3 examples of Lincoln smoking what appears to be a big cigar (or something else) and 3 smoke puffs above that. Each on a Cu cent and was in a different roll. Sort of comical, actually. Someone with a small die set has been pounding away for some entertainment.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

The marked coin (on the right side) could be one of mine. What state are you in, I dropped the coins off 5-5-08 at a Wachovia in alabama.
I have also found what looks to be like a gold colored/plated penny. The coating does not rub off like paint on the one I have.

Found a Canadian modern penny marked in black sharpie with a E or M here in British Columbia. I have not seen any evidence of widespread marking, or widespread hand sorting for that matter.

Several days ago, I did find get a few 10 blocks of Canadian nickels wrapped in white paper blue letter "Coinage" brand wrapping. They were ALL 2000+ which may indicate commercial sorting going on. Previous rolls from Coinage were also light to devoid of nickel as well.

1961 D painted red, white and blue vertical stripes. Looked like machinists blue marking dye and model airplane paint or nail polish. I scratched it off and put it in my copper bucket.
