I'm sure some of you have already done this math. Approximately how many zinc cents does it take to equal a weight of one pound?
My bank will take back bags of coins and they count them later. So if I give them approx 20lbs of zinc pennies how much money should the deposit slip say?
There are between 147 and 152 copper US cents per pound.. depending on wear.
I don't remember the number of zincs.. something like 181. If you know how many you want to return in each bag.. like 5000 or 2500 I can run that many through my counter and give you the exact weight with or without the bag in grams. Will you be using standard heavy duty clear plastic coin deposit bags? I think 5000 zincs is about 27 pounds.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

For my dump bank that accepts bagged coins I'm going to be weighing my bags of zinc on postal scales.
They are only accurate to the nearest 0.2 lbs but I figure if I give the bank bags weighing 27.6 pounds that will be slightly over $50 worth of pennies.
27.6 pounds x 454 grams/pound x 1 zinc/2.5 grams = 5012.16 zinc pennies or ~$50 dollars.
I'll fill the bag to 27.4 lbs, then drop the pennies in individually until it just turns over 27.6 pounds (about 43 pennies). Then maybe 7 more to make up for the weight of the bag and to have a cushion.
I don't know that the bank would care if the bags are a bit short but I figure they sure won't care if they are slightly over the $50 amount.
I'll for sure let ya'll know how this works out as soon as I make my first drop, hopefully next week or the week after to be sure.
I can't be sitting on >$1,500 of zinc for any length of time!
Thanks Everyone The bank gave me some of those clear plastic deposit bags so I'll try and do like WilliamC and get it as close to $50 USD as possible. Going to be using a bathroom scale though.
