I was hanging out / loafing in the local coin shop the other day and this lady came in wanting to know about a few misc coins she had. They were nothing special, but she eventually noticed the Silver Walking Liberties in the Display case and asked if they were worth anything, the dealer said uhh..... Yeeah. She said "Well I just cashed $80 worth of them (FV) at the bank minutes ago." I said "Ma'am, to which bank did you take those?" she said "U.S. Bank" which is within an eye-shot from were I was, on the opposite side of the square. I said "SEEE YA!!!!!!"
Unfortunately, The bank acknowledge receiving the coins but some teller there was already wise to what they were. That was over a week ago, I'm still sick over it.

| That makes me sick to hear it. That would have been 160 Walking Liberties times $7 melt just for ease of multiplication = at least $1,120 that she gave away. Probably a very kind sheeple that old woman, but a sheeple nonetheless. |

| With that many, what do you want to bet 10 of them were 1996. Go back to the bank and see if the teller will sell the entire lot for $22 or even $23 straight across.. after you examine them and make sure their are enough 96 coins in there. You might still be able to salvage this deal. |

| After reading HCBTT's response, I may not understand the denomination. I thought the original post referred to the old half dollar Walkers. But then, in reading HCBTT's response, these may have been the fairly recent Silver Dollar Walking Liberties. Which were they Miser-stro? If the later, they may indeed have contained some 96s which are worth much more than melt. I can imagine a mistake in turning in a bunch of old dirty Walkers thinking they aren't worth anything over face. But, turning in the Silver Dollar Walking Liberties would be an entire new level of foolishness (choose your own adjective). The reverse of that coin is even labeled 1 Oz. Fine Silver. The old lady just must have been confused somehow. When I am old, and perhaps confused, I hope my family takes better care of me than allowing me to do such a foolish act. |

I think HCBTT may have made his first mistake ever on this Forum....
But I do think they must have been the old half dollars. |

At the coin shop I used to work at, bank tellers would come in sometimes to sell all the rare coins people deposited at face value. Made my heart skip a beat, each time I saw Morgans and Peace dollars come in---knowing that they just came from a bank! Lots of walkers and bens. I only once ever knew of modern Silver American Eagle bullion coins cashed in for face. But Peace dollars? You'd be surprised how many old ladies still think they're still worth a dollar! |

I suppose I could edit my original post.. LOL. It is possible that I made a mistake.. I didn't see any mention of denomination. I was trying to give Miser-stro a chance to possibly salvage something from the deal. I now believe it is more probable that they were half dollars.. in which case he should still try to buy them off the lucky bank teller if there are any 21's in there.
Funny thing.. when I was doing some drive bys today at the banks I was thinking about this story and I asked for big dollars, half dollars and pennies.. then I asked if they had any of these, and showed them a One Ounce Gold Eagle $50 gold piece.. just in case somebody cashed them in. Wouldn't it be great if I happened to time it just right, and got just the right teller, and they sold me some for $50 each? |

I still hope for the Quarter Eagle in a penny roll like Hoard heard about.
THAT would be something. |

I keep hoping for that quarter eagle also.. it is certainly the right size. Heck, I was pretty happy getting 2 solid rolls of dimes in penny rolls the other day.
One of my buddies at coin club was asked if he wanted rolls of big dollars at his bank or credit union. He said sure, figuring they were Ikes. He opens them up and it is all Morgan and Peace dollars! He got something like 10 rolls. You just never know what you might get at the bank sometimes. |
