I've been reading up on shape memory alloys, or "smart metals." A mere description of their properties doesn't do justice, so check out this video to see what I'm talking about: You must be logged in to see this link.

Pretty neat, huh? Just imagine a coin like this!

Wikipedia has more: You must be logged in to see this link.

Freaking awesome!

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams

ANd?

What metal is this and why would they make it into a paperclip?

Anyway. I'm sure it will have some great uses for the future. Maybe I'll dream one up tonight in my sleep and patent it by next year... :)

I think that they use memory alloy in some eyeglass frames. It helps a lot when you sit on them.

That's a nightmare for body shops bottom lines. Cars that pop out their own dents when you run them through a hot rinse at the car wash.

You can do that with plastic too. Stamp something into Plexiglas, sand it flat, and bake it. The stamped portion will rise.

Shirts are sometimes sold in boxes with plastic lids. In the USA, liver is sold in tubs with lids of the same material, so you can get a stack of "liver lids" from a butcher and play with them. Color the back side with marking pens and bake the lids at about 250 degrees for a few minutes. They will shrink to about 1/3 size and the colors become very intense. It's a nice project for a gathering of kids. You can find plastic of this type in hobby shops with the brand name Shrinky Dink.

A penny sorted is a penny earned!
