I keep reading some of the people ads on ebay and they show buying these monstrous hoards of pennies/coins. How does one go about finding these and then getting the people to sell them? The guy I bought my first 5,000 bag of wheats off of,said he knew a guy in PA that had 15 MILLION wheats at his house and seen them and could verify that there was a garage full. Now he isn't returning my PM's when I try and contact him. Anyone know of such a hoard or how to find them? Derek

There are a few on here with pretty large hoards. Don't think they are parting with them any time soon though....

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

I don't really mean on here per se, But I guess I could be.I know there are older people that have been saving wheats for 40 or 50 yrs and have to be getting ready to sell them and things like that.I'm more interested in wheats but the CU are just too good to pas up. Derek |

You nailed it.. LOL. I just looked in the back storage room.. and there it was! Even found a half bag of OBW rolls of wheat cents I had forgotten I had.
Finding the bigger hoards is about getting the word out there that you are a buyer for that type of thing. Of course when a holder of a substantial hoard makes the decision to sell some or all of his holdings he will be looking for the best price.. so only the strong buyers will even be offered the deal. You can advertise in Craig's list or you local paper.. let your banks know you are looking to buy coins if any come up etc. You might actually find a few. But if you want to get the bigger hoards or several of the medium hoards you have to be willing to pay more than average. I get offered deals all the time because they know I am a strong buyer of that sort of thing and have ready cash available. I sell wheat cents and coppers all the time out of my hoard. If I wanted to sell at wholesale prices I would just sell them locally and not have to worry about shipping though. |

I think that is probably pretty close to average for the commons. I have had no trouble getting $260 for my bags whenever I have decided to sell off a few. |

A true mix.. I even had a guy find an 09-S VDB once. But that was only once out of about 200 bags. Sure surprised the heck out of me.. but I was happy for him. I actually found one in XF in some little baggie that I had sitting on my shelf that I probably paid 3 cents each for. I was surprised as hell to find that one too.. It was the last hole I needed to fill in my collection.. I had been staring at that hole for 35 years. |

15 million wheats? Wow! $150,000 face alone. Let's pretend it is one of us who is holding on to that many wheat cents. He or she would had to have bought most of them beyond their face value unless they were rather old and had a huge penney hoarding habit in their youth. Even if they were all hoarded at face value, the inflation factor would have made their buying power prior to 1958 or even 1978 much greater than it is now. So that means they were much more of an investment in relationship to wages than an equal amount of copper cents would be now.
If they were hoarded all of those years then perhaps the hoarder has a compulsion and is unable to let go of them. Of course it may be that he or she is still waiting for higher prices before they cash in. But how would you devest yourself of all those wheat cents with out flooding the market? It's not like they are plain bullion copper cents where their value is mostly melt value alone. Their primary value is in collector's value.

If you are serious about finding hoards I would think estate sales are the way to go.
I'm sure there are already plenty of people in the know about coins who go to estate sales but that would seem the thing to do if one wants to find the motherload.
For now I'll stick to buying bank rolls. |

misteroman.. good news.. there are still a few deals out there on wheat cents. I picked up 9200 at your buy price today. And get this.. I bought a group of 300 regular wheat cents and 100 steelies for all of $6.. only 1.5 cents each!
It was a great coin show.. but I missed a real bargain. One of my buddies got a 1908-S Indian in fine from a dealer junk box for 70 cents! |

Best way to find out about local coin shows is to join your local coin club. You can find clubs close to you by going to the ANA website. You can also find coin shows by googling coin show and your state.. that will help you to find the websites that list these shows.. then you just save them in your favorites. Also, Numismatic News and Coin World usually have a pretty comprehensive listing of upcoming coin shows. |
