Hey, I've been sorting for about 3 months now....sorting boxes that is. THe first time I got one box from my bank. Then another. Then I went around one day and got 9 boxes from 5 different banks... but I am just 26 years old and feel like an idiot asking for boxes of pennies. I said I was trying to put together a set when they asked me.... BUt, What do you guys say to the bank? How do you order 10 boxes at a time? Which banks are most willing? My bank is a Chase, but I opened a National City bank account today to broaden my resources.

I took the advice of many of the members on this forum; I continue to open new bank accounts with minimum balances as often as possible. Then I order anywhere from 4-6 boxes from each bank on a regular basis without raising any eyebrows. I leave my phone number, and they call me when the pennies arrive. The goal being to get your copper sorting pile large enough that you can't keep up with it, thus creating a reserve. Good luck! |

Welcome wolvesdad.
Number one, don't feel like an idiot. It doesn't matter what you need the coins for. The banks are there to serve you. Once you have established a good relationship with you bank(s) then it should not be a problem. I have one branch where one particular financial advisor always helps me. I asked her if she wonders what I'm doing with all these pennies, as I also pick up boxes there. She said it is none of her business. Cool.
Once the relationship is established, phone calls are all that should be needed to order. Sometimes you can stop in an get a box, but a phone call should allow you to order however many boxes you want. Good luck and don't give up!
Deal
p.s. Age is not a factor, the way you carry yourself in the bank is all the matters. Confidence....Oh yeah, I'm 27 and most of the employees know me by name BECAUSE of the pennies. Pennies actually helped me to better my relationship with the banks due to the frequency of my visits. |
Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

Yes,it's the way you carry yourself that is the key to all of this. Be confident and polite but remember you are not asking them for a loan. No matter what your opinion may be of the federal Reserve system don't give the poor tellers a lecture about something they have no control of. |

One other hint, instead of asking for 10 boxes say that you would like to order 10 boxes for next Thursday. Banks usually don't have 10 extra boxes of pennies in the vault and asking for 10 boxes clues them in that you are new to the game.
On the other hand if you place an order, you give them the impression that you have ordered before and that you know how the system works from experience. (The banks place orders with Brinks or another coin service and then the coin service makes deliveries once or twice a week.)
Also you can ask for a standing order. I have two bank at the moment that have been ordering me pennies every week now for months. Just watch for the bank's breaking point and try not to exceed the "norm" by too much at any one bank. 10 boxes a week is no problem for a lot of banks, but I never go over that... |

THanks.... I see that as my mistake a couple of times... asking for 3 boxes, when that is all they have... it does tip them off, or bother them...
I think I've found one or two banks that I can start a good relationship with! My closest and personal bank I've already accidently soured a bit. |

Also consider taking in some chocolates for the tellers that help you. I particularly favor the chocolate coins that come in the little net bags. Really sweetens the deal. I limit my orders at any one bank to 24 at a time.. but I have a really bad habit.. LOL.
Also one very critical factor.. if you order boxes of pennies from any bank, make sure you pick them up on the day you agreed to. The banks have very limited vault space and they might not think kindly of you if it is filled up with your pennies. If they give you boxes of new pennies in your order, just smile and say thank you.. don't try to get picky about what boxes they are giving you or pretty soon you won't be getting any boxes there. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I have one branch that will trade new penny boxes for used. They don't care how many if they are new as long as they have some for their other customers. |

I told my bank when I actually opened the account that I am a coin collector (didn't tell them about the zinc/copper part) and I like to sort boxes of pennies, etc. They said that is fine and even told me about their coin machine ( I lucked out, I don't have to even roll the zinc to return it ).
I call them every Monday morning and tell them how many boxes I want and when I will be there to pick them up.
Like others have said here .. don't feel embarassed, they are there to serve you and if you are upfront with them they have nothing to complain about. Any embarassment you (or they) feel will fade once you get into the routine.
Plus think about it this way, you are giving the teller ladies a story to talk about..."What does that guy do with all thoughs pennies?" "What's the deal with that penny guy?"
Women like men with an aura of mystery to them. LOL! |
