I found this on the real worth on pennys and nickels from the feds . They were talking about making pennys worth 5 cents each. I dont know but that would be cool if feds make penny worth 5 cents each. You must be logged in to see this link.
Its from the federal goverment and what do think about it? I dont know but it came out after ban.

I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is. |

That is an excellent article. I encourage everyone here to take the time to read it. I'm going to print it out and also share it on other boards. I don't see how they could turn the current penny into a nickel since it would cause too many problems making the adjustment. But I can see them doing away with the penny and making the nickel smaller and of course cheaper.
Thanks for this find. |

Starwarsgeek, no offense to you personally, but I wouldn't hold my breath or stash a ton of zincolns under my bed just yet. The article was an essay from but one economist who works at the Chicago Fed reserve bank. It's not official policy of FedGov. As many have proclaimed loudly, the Fed reserve branch banks are private banks. Even the big Fed bank is only semi-governmental, and that's using the term "semi" very loosely. As the author states, Congress would have to write a law in order to re-base the penny, and I don't see that as likely.
My own personal opinion is that pennies should be phased out. Nickels, too. I was just at the office caffeteria buying breakfast. Not only do they have pennies in a small bowl for the taking and leaving, but there were a fair number of nickels in there, too! One alternative to phasing out nickels, though is to stop producing nickels and re-start production of half-dimes. A half dime would weigh half of what a dime weighs, so that would probably make it too small for most Americans to accept, however. On the positive side, the half dime would be about 20% melt value/face value ratio, same as dimes, quarters, and halves, and there is a history in the US (albeit long ago) of having a half dime (or half dsime) denomination. |

I like that half dime idea! I collect half dimes.. from both the US and Canada.
Starwarsgeek.. I wasn't one of the ones that slammed you, even though the report was a year old. As I recall, I said I was for it.

| I always get a kick out of seeing HCBTT's photographs of his pre-sorting penny stash. |
