Should I get $1000 in Pennies
$1000 in Silver and $1000 in Gold?
Or should I put nickels somewhere in there?
What is the smartest thing to do?

Personally, I would skip the gold and split that thousand between more silver and some nickels.

Welcome to the forum!

I like your idea of mixing it up a little. If it were me I would probably put the bulk of it in silver, either .999 generic rounds and bars, or pre-65 'junk' silver coins.

If you are just getting started on sorting pennies, a little money goes a long way. You could take, say $200 of that and get 8 boxes of pennies. That should last you a decent amount of time...you have to sort through all the boxes, take the zincs back and use them to get more boxes, sort those, etc., until you turn them all into copper. It will keep you busy for awhile.

You could also buy a few boxes of nickels. (no sorting)

If you want some gold, you could pick up a few fractional gold eagles or maple leafs, and still have plenty left over for silver.

This is just my opinion, you should use your own judgement.

HMMM You say to buy a few nickels and no sorting? Are all nickels "real" money?

Silver and Nickels only? no gold or copper pennies?

few fractional gold eagles or maple leafs

How much do these cost?

All US nickels are currently real money.

About the fractional gold...I just picked up a few 1/10 oz gold eagles for $64 each at a local dealer.

Yes, I do. I already have thousands of dollars hoarded away in nickels. I decided to go with them because I wanted to be vested in nickel which has gone up over 90% in the past 12 months. Yet, I'm vested into copper at the same time (25/75% U.S. nickels) Like the others said, no sorting. They don't take up so much room and if I ever have to, it would be a little more easy to to cash them in than copper pennies. Still, if I could exchange them dollar for dollar for already sorted copper cents, I guess I would.

No I meant stick to your original plan:
$1000 in Copper pennies
then instead of $1000 gold do:
$500 in Nickels
$1500 in silver, preferably in 1oz American Eagles or 1oz Canadian Maples

I would stick to the base metals like copper. And you can get it at the bank at no extra cost. No brainer IMO.
